One of the most common and deadliest forms of cancer is CRC. It usually occurs in older adults, and victims often experience abdominal pain, constipation or diarrhea, blood in the stool, and passing excessive amounts of gas.1 CRC typically begins with colon polyps or ulcerative colitis, both of which are risk factors; removal of these polyps can help decrease risk of CRC development.2 However, these factors may not present themselves with symptoms, which is why regular screening is necessary for adults 50 years of age or older.1
Some studies indicate nearly 80% of CRC incidents (in western civilizations) are on account of diet.3 Though a common part of the American diet, red and processed meats have been associated with multiple diseases, including CRC and many other cancers. Previous research indicates that physical fitness also contributes to health status in both healthy and diseased persons, including cancer patients. This review will investigate the effects of diet (specifically red meat removal) and exercise on CRC risk and microbiome composition in CRC patients.
Diet Selection & Cancer Risk
Several studies have been conducted to assess the relationship between diet selection and cancer risk. Many interventions have been evaluated in these studies, such as a vegetarian diet, red meat removal, and decreasing saturated fat intake.
