Have you ever wondered if our drinking water is actually safe to drink? The topic of safe drinking water according to my research isn’t a topic that it’s given that much attention even though there have been events and statistics that have impacted our drinking water. There have been important events such as the chemical spill in Charleston, West Virginia and the ash sludge in Kingston Tennessee in 2008, these kind of events even though they have happen a few years ago still have an impact on our drinking water today. Lauren Russell is an important person because she stated that climate change is another factor that can affect our drinking water because it can impact the quality of the water since climate change is a main world problem it affects everyone 's drinking water. Another big factor of drinking water is what kind of chemicals are in our water that makes it safe for us to drink? I feel like people and I should be informed of the risks that human and natural disasters can do to our sites that we get our drinking water from. And we should also be inform if the chemicals that they put in our drinking water are one hundred percent safe. The reason why I chose this topic is because water is a necessity for every human so if we all get informed about this topic we can enforce better laws that can ensure us the best water quality for us to drink.
People should know the background events of human and natural disasters that have affected our drinking water and even if it
In the article, "Protect our Drinking Water," published by Scientific American in 2014, it is argued that that current standard of the United State's drinking water is abhorrently low. Through the use of logos, powerful diction, and pathos, the authors convincingly stir the audience of American residents into the belief that the government must take further action in order to protect the well being of its citizens. Perhaps the strongest literary device used throughout the piece was the clear logos, as the addition of facts and statistics served to give the article an increased credibility. By providing the audience with irrefutable statistics, the reader is informed of the full extent of the damage that unclean water does.
Bottled water manufacturers’ marketing campaigns capitalize on isolated instances of contaminated public drinking water supplies by encouraging the perception that their products are purer and safer than tap water. But the reality is that tap water is held to
Water contamination is vastly becoming an alarming issue across the world. We rely on clean water to survive, yet right now we are heading towards a water crisis. Changing climate patterns are threatening lakes and rivers, and key sources that we tap for drinking water are being overdrawn or tainted with pollution (www.nrdc.org). Clean and plentiful water is the cornerstone of prosperous communities. Yet as we enter the 21st century, swelling demand and changing climate patterns are
Water is essential to life, scientific fact, not debatable (Tracy). More than half of all Americans drink bottled water; about a third of the public consumes it regularly (Olsen). Many drink or buy bottled water simply because they believe it is of better quality, cleaner, and better tasting. On the contrary, several individuals do not know the cons of drinking bottled water. Today, there are many misconceptions and myths about bottled water. Many people are uneducated about what goes into our bottles and how it not only affects us but also our environment. In the article “The New Oil” by Jeneen Interlandi and Ryan Tracy they discuss the issues that have to do with water and the privatization of it. They believe there is a crisis and something has to be done. Due to the cost, pollution, shortage, and health issues, bottled water should be outlawed. Water should not be controlled by water bottle companies and should not be allowed to be sold in plastic bottles.
The population hugely outnumber the amount of water we have here in San Diego. The water that we buy in bottled from other places we do not know the contents of that water. The water may have a label and tells us this and that, but the truth is they don’t have to tell us everything that is in the water. The water here in San Diego is tested daily and monitored closely. Maybe people should consider drinking our tap water. All we have to do is by filters, though we can’t always test our tap water in our homes we can do our part to help protect ourselves. All the plastic that we are putting in our oceans are killing our animals. This hurts our food chain and makes harder for animals we need to survive to thrive. By buying less bottled water we not only help ourselves, we help our environment.
It is easy person to point their finger at big industrial and chemical plants and blame them for the cause of so much pollution in our water. When taking a closer look, those same people pointing the finger are equally contributing to the pollution of our water supply and are also to blame. This person could be a friend, family member, classmate, or even you. Even if people do not think that they have a part in this, most do. A variety of data has shown traces of pharmaceuticals used by every day humans in our water. As well as pharmaceuticals there is a presence of chemical contaminants, mainly pesticides that are causing harm to our environment and wildlife. Even humans can be affected by such contamination in the water supply, and
Globally, over seven hundred and eighty-three million people do not have access to clean water (The Water Project, 2016). Millions of people have to struggle endlessly to fill up pails of water for themselves and their families; however, this does not happen in America. Water contamination and access, or lack thereof, is a third world issue. The United States is a global empire, wealthy, and the land of opportunity; Flint, Michigan became a local cesspool, impoverished, and without basic drinking water. The visual of desolate villagers walking miles for water is not the universal or unique image anymore. The ordinary town of Flint became a national icon for water scarcity and paranoia. Water contamination, disease outbreak and widespread panic
Knowing that not everyone in the world has access to clean water is terrifying. While I live in a first world country drinking eight cups of water a day without thinking about it, somewhere else another seventeen year old girl has to worry about getting sick from the water she drinks every day. I cannot just sit around and do nothing when somewhere out there some of God’s children are hurting.
Many people believe that their source of water does not matter and has little or no consequences. Most of those people argue that all water is the same but for those worried about our environment, bottled water is highly wasteful because they believe it’s more appealing because it might be contaminated. The reason this should be important to our society is that good clean water is fundamental to a good health. Our current generations purchase their water because they have been convinced that the specific liquid is the purest drink around. But they can’t really say that until they truly know where their water is coming from. Labels can be extremely misleading and deceptive like in one case where a company claimed their water came from pure
Water regulates the Earth’s temperature as it also regulates the temperature of the human body, carries nutrients and oxygen to cells, cushions joints, protects organs and tissues, and removes wastes. Nearly 97 percent of the world’s water is undrinkable, two percent is locked in ice caps and glaciers, leaving only one percent for all of humanity’s needs. A person can live more than thirty days without food but only seven days without clean water. Water is the foundation of life, yet millions of people around the world lack clean water. The Flint Water Crisis is a local issue that exemplifies the global ongoing water calamity. Due to the change is water source thousands of children in Flint, Michigan have been exposed to water with high levels of lead which can lead to serious health problems. Therefore, if I had the opportunity to solve a current issue, it would be America’s own Water Crisis.
In the article "The Drinking Water security and Safety Amendments of 2002: is America's Drinking Water Infrastructure Safer Four Years later?", Steven Shermer discusses the importance of protecting America’s drinking water systems from potential threats. Shermer begins by discussing the importance of water as well as the importance of protecting
The organization, American Red Cross, explains ways to treat water at home to reduce the contamination before usage. For example, some of the strategies are “(1) Filter the water using a piece of cloth or coffee filter to remove solid particles. (2) Heat the water until a boil” (redcross.org). The American Red Cross’ water treatment strategy helps nullify the chlorine in the water, but does not effectively solve the entire problem. Therefore, Erin Brockovich, an environmental activist, discusses the importance of having the government and water cleaning company solve the issue. Berkovich was a speaker at a community meeting on “Monday night at a town hall” (cvb.biz). She states, “‘It isn’t until you know the truth that you’re empowered to make different choices for yourself and for your family’” (cvb.biz). In this statement, Berkovich is explaining that to create changes, the community must question the government and water cleaning company about their strategies on how to fix the contamination. In addition, the community should discuss about how their water should be cleaned after the contamination is fixed. As a result, community leaders and organizations have played a role to bringing conscious to Stockton’s water
According to Dosomething.org, there are 884 million people who lack safe drinking water. Water related diseases take More than 840,000 lives each year. Diseases such as diarrhea
Consumer Attitudes and Behavior: Over the decade of 1990’s, the safety of tap water became a topic of growing concern to US households. A 1999 survey found that 72% of all respondents and 89% of young adults voiced some concern about the quality of their household’s water supply. A majority of households used either bottled water or some purification system. The number taking no precautions declined from 47% in 1995 to 35% in 1999.
70 % of our Earth surface is covered by water and almost 60% of the human body contain water for nutrient transportation. The unique characteristic of water is water molecule is the only substance in this Earth that exist in all three physical states of matter which are solid, liquid and gas. All human beings need water to survive. The national development over the years cause the rate of water pollution increased. According to Gebre & Rooijen (2009) water pollution can be considered as a sign that derives from economic growth and is a common phenomenon in urbanized cities in developing countries. In general, there are three main issues that related to water pollution which are the causes, effects and the way to decrease this problem.
