It was the night of December 2, 1984. It was the night that would change the lives of nearly 500,000 citizens in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India, forever. It was the night that at least 30 tons of the highly toxic gas, methyl isocyanate, was released from the Union Carbide factory in Bhopal, India. It has been recorded as the world’s worst industrial disaster. But how did such a disaster take place? The Union Carbide plant dated back to 1969 where it was a formulations plant. There were dangers with using such insecticides however. Organophosphate poisoning, the result from exposure to insecticides, was a potential threat in addition to the numerous risks associated with methyl isocyanate. The United States Environmental Protection Agency mentions that there are many chronic effects as well as short term effects from acute exposure from MIC such as reproductive and developmental effects, decreased fertility, blindness, difficulty breathing, respiratory tract infections, and fevers. MIC was not only being produced to incorporate into herbicides and insecticides, but also so carbamate pesticides could be used for medical purposes. Human pharmacotherapy, therapy using pharmaceutical drugs, uses the chemicals regularly, for example, HIV treatments contained carbamate groups. One of the most toxic carbamate pesticides is carbofuran. It is very popular for use in controlling insects in field crops such as potatoes, corn, and soybeans. It is also known as a systemic insecticide, a plant absorbs it through the roots and then distributes the insecticide through the organs. What has been brought to light in recent years is the effects of these chemicals on the body’s immune response. By introducing these toxic chemicals into the body, the potency of the immune system is compromised. More commonly than not, the body’s magnificent defense system will kick in and destroy foreign invaders but all it can take is an overwhelming amount of chemicals to slow or even shut down the body’s response systems. Finally, the role of government agencies such as FDA, EPA and OSHA in preventing excessive amount or zero amounts of toxic chemicals from entering the environment will be discussed. In the right doses it’s generally harmless; however, being a toxin is never risk-free. There are many possible health issues that exposure can bring. In the beginning of this essay I would like to present some facts and figures related to our topic. On December 3, 1984, at the Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal, India there was a deadly leak of methyl isocyanate. It caused thousands of people to die and affected generations to come. The leak happened due to a series of human and mechanical failures. The local health officials were neither knowledgeable about the deadly chemical that was being stored there nor were they equipped to handle the tragedy. Another incident happened at the Union Carbide plant in West Virginia. A toxic cloud of the same chemical was leaked into the atmosphere and it was a shocking reminder that such accidents could happen in the both developed and developing countries. On August 28, 2008, at about 10:35 p.m., a runaway chemical reaction occurred inside a 4,500 gallon pressure vessel known as a residue treater, causing the vessel to explode violently in the methomyl unit at the Bayer CropScience facility in Institute, West Virginia. Highly flammable solvent sprayed from the vessel and immediately ignited, causing an intense fire that burned for more than 4 hours. The fire was contained inside the Methomyl-Larvin insecticide unit by the Bayer CropScience fire brigade with mutual aid assistance from local volunteer and municipal fire departments.

On December 2nd 1984, 40 tons of deadly Methyl Isocyanate (MIC) gas and other toxic gasses were released in to the atmosphere from Union Carbide India, Limited’s (UCIL) plant in Bhopal, India. Water meant for cleaning internal pipes was mixed with MIC, due to a faulty valve, which led to an exothermic reaction. The pressure and heat from this powerful reaction led to break down of a safety valve which then caused MIC gas to be released into the atmosphere.

Three causes of the 1984 Bhopal Chemical Plant disaster in India were long-term financial difficulties, poor safety management and inadequate emergency plans. The disaster occurred when water entered a methyl isocyanate (MIC) storage tank, which led to a runaway reaction and then discharged toxic MIC vapour into the atmosphere.
