The Effects Of Police Use Of Force

Police use of force in America has been and still is a major area of concern to the American public. The media seemingly never runs out of stories and cases to push into the mainstream for the public to watch and develop more concern for this area of law enforcement. Furthermore, there is a portion of the population who believe that the use of force by law enforcement is disproportionately used on minorities more specifically the African American community (Kolhatkar, 2017). However, is this use of force epidemic a reality in both of these cases? Another use of force issue is the use of lethal force by law enforcement officers. Again the argument seen in the media and social media is often that there is a large portion of lethal force that is used on minorities as compared to Caucasian individuals (Lowery, 2016). Additionally, that the use of lethal force should be avoided and in other cases being used in excess (The Guardian, 2017). Current research in the field of police use of force and police use of lethal force in relationship towards race is going to be reviewed in order to show a broader picture that is more representative of the real issues.
The Numbers The numbers in police use of force vary depending on what measures are used. Was the force reasonable or unreasonable or was force used improperly is just a few. Strictly looking at the frequency of the use of force in encounters would lead one to believe there is no such epidemic as media outlets would lead people
