Psychological assessments are used in educational, organizational, clinical, and various other settings. Within academic settings, counselors, psychologists, administrators, and teachers utilize numerous assessments in order to make accurate and appropriate decisions regarding students’ placement, admission, and other important individual and institutional inferences. Appropriate interpretations of students’ assessment results are critical to ensure that a student receives the most beneficial education plan necessary. When the Diagnostic Statistical Manual 5th Edition was published in 2013, the Conners’ 3rd Edition included various new structures in order to match accuracy for the disorders in which it was intended to measure. The aim of this research paper is to assess the advantages of the Conners’ 3rd Edition’s purpose, standardized sample, age norms, test format, rating scales, content and symptom scales, scoring, interpretation, reliability, and validity. The Conners’ 3rd Edition was developed in 2008 as an invaluable behavioral assessment. Its primary purpose is to assist in the detection and recognition of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, and disorders that occur often in simultaneity with ADHD such as Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder ("Conners 3 - Conners 3rd Edition™," 2016). The Conners 3rd Edition also has a built in instrument that allows measurement for disorders that are not externalized, such as anxiety and depression
Clinical Case 2: Erica brings her fourteen-year-old son, Daniel, into my office. Erica states that Daniel was diagnosed with ADHD when he was ten, but she’s not sure if that accounts for all his behavioral issues. Erica mentioned that Daniel often does not follow through with his chores, fails to finish schoolwork, is often irritable, and “doesn’t want to listen.” She wants to know what other conditions can occur with ADHD. I mention that ADHD can be comorbid with disorders such as, tic, anxiety, and mood disorders. I emphasize that ADHD is frequently comorbid with disruptive behavior disorders, such as conduct disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and disruptive mood dysregulation disorder.
Foster child, Annalisa Carrion, was replaced from the non-kinship therapeutic foster home of Carmen Arvelo and Miguel Quiles (Ms. Arvelo’s husband) on June 22nd, 2015. A report was received on June 26th, 2015 with the allegation of laceration, bruises, welts, and inadequate guardianship regarding Annalisa Carrion against Miguel Quiles.
Attention Deficit hyperactive disorder is a prevalent and ever rising affliction in modern societies. “According to the American Psychiatric Association (2009), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common mental disorders in school-aged children(Saemi 179)”.While the initial response to handling the syndrome is to medicate it and continually medicate to stem the Simpsons. This is not a temporary instance to cure the disease just a never ending cycle. It is my belief that not only is the medication over prescribed, but the alternative methods are to quickly overlooked. To clarify, I do not argue that the medication is uncalled for and should be removed. Only that everyone who has the condition should be
Attention deficit hyperactive disorder should be diagnosed in more people because it is affecting the learning, working, and the living ability in children, teens, and adults.
“Don’t worry about walking mile in my shoes, just try a day thinking in my head” (Author unknown)
Living with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder is one of the hardest challenges I have ever faced. Having been diagnosed at the age of seven, it is the most prevalent thing in my life. ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed psychological disorder in the United States (Hughes). It is a persistent disorder, often prevalent through adolescence and adulthood. Most individuals diagnosed are between the ages of seven and nine, although there have been numerous cases where individuals have been diagnosed in their later years. Case studies show that males are four times more likely to be diagnosed/affected with ADHD, and lately, studies have shown an unexplained increase in the number of diagnoses made in children. It has been recognized that in the past, people have scoffed at the diagnosis of ADHD, and even disregarding and bashing the disorder, calling it things like, “a real medical hoax”(Citation). These individuals, however, are severely misguided, seeing as though ADHD is a real disorder, and it affects millions of people worldwide in present day. There have been neurological studies studying and showing that ADHD is, in fact, neurologically related, and it is most likely caused by chemical imbalances in individual’s brains (Citation). One greatly debated question in the world of Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder is, “Can an individual that was diagnosed with ADHD eventually outgrow it?” One side of this argument states that an individual that has been
Andrew Coogan, Alison Baird, Aurel Popa-Wagner and Johannes Thome are the authors of the article, “Circadian rhythms and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: The what, the when and the why.” They stated that the main features of Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is impulsivity, inattention and hyperactivity. However, they also discussed those children that have trouble sleeping could also be a result for most of the symptoms for the Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Unfortunately, it is not certain how trouble sleeping come to be a mutual problem with Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Therefore, they researched and wrote this article to find out why sleep disturbance is so common with Attention
“Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder is one of the most common childhood disorders and can continue through adolescence and adulthood” (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). ADHD in real terms is the inability to focus. Several people have describe people with ADHD as skirmish, talkative, and have trouble waiting. ADHD has been previously described as ADD (attention deficit disorder) but the only difference is the “H”. This “H” describes how this disorder deals with hyperactivity, while ADD can be more calm.
Behavior is an enormous reason of why ADHD is misdiagnosed. It is also a big component of a child’s development. This leads to further analysis in the developmental normal behaviors and the ones that we misidentify as ADHD. As a teacher and as a parent we want our kids to behave in an appropriate manner forgetting that they are too young to behave a certain way. As we know that
I do agree with you. I feel as though the assessments you have chosen are appropriate for school counseling. The assessments you have chosen all focus on children and will determine whether or not they have a mental illness. As you mentioned some of the assessments you mentioned like the ADHD assessment may need more testing to come to diagnosis. I also mentioned the CDI in my form. The CDI can be used for children who maybe suffering from depression. This is a great tool for school counselors to use to get an idea on whether or not the student is suffering from depression. According to Hays (2013) he mentioned that the CDI reported mixed results. “The CDI can best be used adjunct to other diagnostic tools” (P.152). The findings of the CDI
ADHD Research Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a disability in which children consistently show one or more of the following characteristics over a period of time. (1) Inattention, (2) hyperactivity, and (3) impulsivity (Kirst-Ashman, Zastrow 2004). Children who are inattentive have difficulty focusing on any one thing and may get bored with a task after only a few minutes. Children who are hyperactive show high levels of physical activity, almost always seeming to be in motion. Children who are impulsive have difficulty curbing their reactions and don’t do a good job of thinking before they act.
The average third grade student worries about having the coolest pencils, making a sports team, and what they’re having for lunch. Unfortunately, children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) don’t have it so easy. Daily life in and outside of the classroom can be extremely difficult for such children; however, there are ways to help. The drug Ritalin helps elementary aged male children with ADHD improve test scores by allowing them to focus in the classroom and concentrate on schoolwork (Bronson).
Throughout my life, I have struggled with paying attention in class. In middle school, my parents thought it was my fault for not trying hard in school. They never got on to me about my grades because they assumed I was going to mature. But what they did not understand is that I have a common case of Attention Deficit Disorder. I remember my freshman year so vividly. I think it was because I had to face my first rude awakening in school. My US history teacher, Mr. Brown was a man that I looked up to and admired. He portrayed his lectures with much passion and enthusiasm. I was able to absorb the material because of his teaching style. I remember being eager to tackle my first test because I truly knew the information. But during the test, I
For the Behavior Evaluation Scale assignment, I decided to assess James B. using the NICHQ Vanderbilt Assessment Scale to measure if the behaviors I witnessed last school year and observed by the IS could indicate that the student suffered from ADHD type I (primarily inattentive type), type II (primarily hyperactive/impulsive type) of type III (type I and type II combined). The NICHQ Vanderbilt Assessment Scales are used by healthcare professionals to help diagnose ADHD in children between the ages of 6 and 12. The reason I selected this student to be assessed is because I am familiarized with this student’s situation. Last year, I had the opportunity to help a seasoned IS at my school that specialized in behavioral problems and James B. was her student. She was also kind
Individuals with known disabilities can be an asset to an organization that hires them. There are jobs that require specific requirements and there are those that may be tailored to an individual with a disability. With regard to this requirement organization managers have the Americans with Disabilities Act, which is located under the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to help guide them. It is this law that makes it illegal to discriminate against those that are otherwise qualified for a position, but have a disability. There are procedures that must take place not only for people with attention deficit disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, but for everyone that has a diagnosed disability.
