Two years ago a small Michigan city called Flint was quietly exposed to toxic waste that would continue to impact their lives for years to follow. The water supply for the city was switched to a river that everyone knew was a waste in a failed attempt to save money. As the citizens began to notice all the changes their homes were overtaking due to the water, they were ignored or reassured. Some of the effects caused by the water are irreversible and maybe deadly. A decision made by officials appointed by state Governor Rick Snyder around April 2014, switched Flint, Michigan’s water supply from the natural Lake Huron to Flint river, which had a high level of salt and was once used as a dumping ground for a local motor company, General Motors
The city of Flint is 70 miles away from the costs of the Great Lakes which hold the greatest sources of fresh water, yet there residents still can't get clean tap water. 15% of homes in Flint Michigan are boarded up ,40% of the people are in poverty , high unemployment rate, and consistently on a list for most dangerous places to live in the nation .In an attempt to cut budget cost in 2014 Flint stop getting pre treated water from the city of Detroit . Flint, Michigan has a population of just over 10,000, 36.2% of its population is under the poverty line, and this isn’t even the worse of its problems. Since 2014, the residences of Flint Michigan have been cheated, lied to, and poisoned, all at the hands of its own government. Most consider the governor of Flint, Jerry Ambrose, to be the main culprit. He ignored research that proved Flint’s water was toxic to the body, and then went on to lie to the general population about the safety of the water, Michigan is settled between 4 of the largest freshwater lakes in the world, a fact that served them little in the crisis to come.
An online slideshow titled “How Flint Water Crisis Emerged,” published by MLive, a Michigan news source, written by Wilson, Samuel, Michelle Tessier, and Erin Kirkland gives a timeline of how Flint’s water crisis emerged. The second slide, written by Samuel Wilson, claims that the water crisis actually began in 2013, shortly after Flint’s emergency manager, Ed Kurtz, signed an agreement to stop buying water from Detroit. Kurtz and the city council, in an effort to save money, voted to join a
This situation showcases the major dependency on the unique physical and chemical properties of water by displaying the results of water contamination. The switch from Detroit to Flint water system proved to be a fatal decision as the chemical and physical properties of the water were altered by both the iron and lead metals. The addition of high levels of chloride left the water exposed to contamination of lead and iron. The corrosion of the pipes occurred when the chlorine disinfectant reacted with the elemental metals of iron and lead. The chemical property of water was altered with these high levels of lead, chloride, and iron. This contamination also left the water with different physical properties such as a reddish-brown colour and a pungent odour as opposed to a colourless and odourless liquid. The manipulated physical and chemical properties of water led to irritability, developmental delay, learning difficulties, hearing loss, and many more. Thus, this situation showcases how living things depend for their survival on the unique physical and chemical properties of water as with these alterations it can lead to lethal consequences.
The Flint water crisis has left no one from the damage, even the pets are getting sick of the poisoned water. That was what residents Lee and Ernie of Flint Michigan saw with their cat. Flint is a city in Michigan with a total population of approximately one hundred thousand residents. The issue with the water for Flints and its residents stated in 2014 when the city decided to switch from their water resource from the city of Detroit to a local river. Immediately after the switch residents filed complaints about the water’s smell and color. In Ryan Felton’s “Flint’s Water Crisis: What went wrong,” it is apparent that the crisis should not have happened, and that flint was neglected just because it was an impoverished city.
Flint, Michigan was a city once known for its booming employment opportunities and presence General Motors, an important and thriving company, founded in 1908. Flint is now one of the poorest towns in the United States. It is so poor that its government officials handle it like a third world country. For the past few years, Flint, Michigan has been destroyed, dehumanized, and controlled by incompetent leaders who have betrayed and poisoned its citizens with toxic drinking tap water. The disaster in this city occurred because of the emergency leader who had decided to switch the source of Flint’s drinking water from the Lake Huron to the Flint River in order to save money. This paper focuses on comparing and contrasting the Flint, Michigan
The crisis began in April of 2014. The city of Flint decides to change its main water supply from the system in Detroit to the Flint River. This switch occurred due to the cost of Detroit's water supply. Residents soon noticed a different taste, color and odor to the water. In August and September, the city is put under a water boil advisory. .
In 2014, Flint, Michigan chose to switch their water supply from Lake Huron to the Flint River. During this change, the city did not add any products to the water to stop it from getting polluted. Because there were no products added to the water, the water became extremely contaminated. There was literally no water in Flint that was in drinking condition. Towards the end of the Fall of 2015, Flint’s water crisis went global.
I read an article published by NPR about the water crisis still currently happening in Flint, Michigan. The article provides a timeline leading up to the crisis and the backlash it has created in the town. It starts off with Flint city officials deciding whether or not the town can save money by getting their water from another source. To do this they would build their own pipeline and it’s said it would save the town up to $200 million is 25 years. Despite saying the water was safe and clean to use, it still caused a lot of problems. Residents complained about how the water tasted and smelt bad, and General Motors refused to continue using the water because they feared it would cause corrosion and damage to their machines. And instead of testing
The problem in Flint, Michigan was the residents came to the conclusion that iron found its way into their water supply and people began to panic at the sight of brownish water. In fear they went to city officials and to city police to figure out the problem. They receive all their tap water from the Flint River which is highly corrosive and the Department of Environmental quality was not treating the water with an anti-corrosion agent.
Clean drinking water is a necessity in everybody’s life. Many cities take for granted their seemingly infinite amount of water available to them but for Flint, Michigan residents, there is no such luxury. Many people in that area have been sickened or even killed with the water that is available to them. Governor Rick Snyder of Michigan should resign due to the water crisis in Flint, Michigan because his negligence may have long and short term effects on the health of the city’s residents. There is no excuse for how he is handling this; slowly, and ineffectively.
The Flint water crisis is an issue that has been plaguing the state of Michigan for over two years and has no feasible end in sight. The neglect of various government officials and employees has culminated in a public health danger for thousands of Michigan residents, by way of consumption of water with high levels of lead. Though the individuals deemed responsible for this deplorable situation have lost or resigned from their positions, and some criminal charges have been brought about, there is still a lot that has to be done to try and repair the damage that they did.
According to the articles, Flint CNN Article and Flint Water National Geographic, I read the people of Flint blame the crisis on Rick Snyder and the state Department of Environmental Quality. The article states that Snyder noticed that he was being blamed for a lot of the problem. One reason they blame them is because they did not treat the water with an anti corrosion agent. Experts say that this would have solved 90 percent of Flint’s water problems. Not using the anti corrosion agent and the lack of concern from Snyder could
Flint in Michigan is located 70 Miles away from the shores of large fresh water bodies, the Great Lakes. Despite this close proximity to the fresh water bodies, the residents have not been able to get the clean water. The water supply of Flint in Michigan in the United States has undergone serious water contamination crisis. The water crisis started in April 2014 (Massachusetts Water Resources Authority, 2016). The contamination of drinking water began when the source of water was changed from the treated Detroit Water and Sewerage Department to the Flint River. This later led to a serious contamination of the water due to lead contamination hence creating more danger in the public health. The Flint River had a corrosive nature and caused lead from the old pipes to leach into the water supply. This caused heavy metals in the water supply. This posed serious health problems. For example, six thousand to twelve thousand children were exposed to the contaminated water. The blood-lead level in children increased. The alteration in the water source was the main reason behind the water crisis in Flint.
Who knew that Flints water could be deadly? Everyone should be allowed to have the same clean water to bathe in, drink, cook with, and to have fun in. Unfortunately, residents in Flint could not do this for quite some time. These residents were bathing and drinking from this water before the founding of high lead levels in it. Not only was it because of the high lead levels, but the pipes were very old as well. Due to actions made by the city council this caused a lot of problems for the residents in the city of Flint. This effected children, pregnant women, and the elderly the most. Many lawsuits were filed against the city of Flint. It was so serious to the point that Governor Snyder had to declare a state of emergency. This took place January 5th of 2016. High levels of lead in the water and old pipes lead to lawsuits, the sickness of Flint residents, and the city of Flint not doing their job.
