Mass media includes Internet, radio, television, mobile devices, and other communication technologies. The existence and power of media influences are strongly recognized as a significant part of the ecology of the young generation. The media has become an inseparable part of the life of teenagers. Nearly every adolescent growing up in the United States is exposed to various encounters with mass media every day. Considering the current influences, the media plays an important role in forming opinions and dictating the actions of the youth culture. Although the interactive quality of video games differs from inactively viewing television or movies, teenagers may still resort to aggressive behavior. Playing video games allow teenagers to become active participants in the game’s script, and therefore benefit from battling in acts of violence. Watching television or movies can negatively affect young people through the violent images and messages that the producers deliver to the audience.
The media has several negative effects on teenagers’ social well-being as well. Advertisements are everywhere, and the way the media portrays super stardom is most likely to have an impact on teens. The young generation is bombarded by advertisements shown on television, the Internet, and magazines towards the female demographic. Advertisers smartly aim products that demand transformation or a way to one’s looks. They specifically try to catch teenage girls at their most susceptible stage when they are still young. Several teenage girls today suffer from inferiority complexes that result in unhealthy eating habits and weight loss due to the advertisements that are portrayed by the media. Teenagers are pressured to make irrational decisions because of the skinny models seen on magazines.
