The Effects of Radiation

Radiation is the emission of electromagnetic energy that is given off in the form of high speed particles that cause ionization. During ionization radiation hits and knocks electrons from an atom creating charged ions. Due to the electron being stripped away from the atom this break the chemical bond. Living tissue within the human body is damaged and attempts to repair it but sometimes the damage is beyond repair. Radiation can either be ionizing or non-ionizing depending on how the radiation itself affects matter. Non-ionizing radiation includes visible light, heat, microwaves, and radio waves. This particular type of radiation deposits energy in the materials that it passes through but cannot break

Your DNA is what ensures cell repair and replacement and allows the body to produce an identical copy of the original cells. This type of change in a person DNA is called a mutation. The body can sometimes repair or fail to repair mutations and even create mutations during repair. These mutations can be teratogenic which occurs when a fetus still in the uterus is exposed and affects only the person who was exposed and genetic which is passed on to offspring.
Non-stochastic is associated with the non-cancerous effects of radiation. Unlike stochastic health effects from non-stochastic or acute exposure appear a lot quicker. Acute health effects include burns, radiation sickness (also referred to as radiation poisoning), erythema, epilation, vomiting, diarrhea, nausea and fatigue. The acute radiation syndrome has 4 stages: Prodromal, latent stage, manifest stage, and death/recovery stage. The prodromal stage is the initial stage where you experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and fatigue. During the latent stage after about a week the patient feels fine and has no symptoms. In the manifest stage the symptoms reappear and can last for hours or weeks. The symptoms during the manifest stage include confusion, epilation (hair loss), diarrhea, infection (fever), hemorrhaging and hear failure. The death/recovery stage, a person will die if they receive over 450 Rem of radiation.
