An external strength is the availability of new technology in the workplace. There are many emerging technologies that will change the practice of nursing in the coming decade including genetics and genomics, less invasive and more accurate tools for diagnosis and treatment of diseases, 3-D printing, robotic simulations, biometrics, electronic health records, and even computerized physician order sets (Huston, 2013). This skill set is forecasted to become even more essential in the coming years. It was deemed safer to give nursing students the capability to make potentially fatal mistakes on plastic simulation men and women as opposed to real humans during our clinical rotation. As with all technology the equipment will get better and will continue to be increasingly more reliable. The newest simulation robots sweat, cry, turn cyanotic, and speak. But as with other robotics, nurse leaders will be challenged to figure out how much simulation may be too much (Huston, 2013). Is too much technology going to hinder the art of nursing? Another example of an external strength is a shift-by-shift safety huddle. If someone says "huddle," I think of football. I imagine a bunch of sweaty men in uniforms, crowding around, strategizing together before they make a play. Nursing is a team sport, too, which is why the idea of "safety huddles" done at the beginning of each shift seems like the perfect way to start 12 hours of working together. TeamSTEPPS is an evidence-based teamwork system aimed at optimizing patient care by improving communication and teamwork skills among health care professionals, including frontline staff (Teamstepps, 2015). On my unit, brainstorming about how to improve the shift report and using TeamSTEPPS, we came up with the idea of having a team huddle. Both shifts gather in the break-room and the off-going staff briefly report the critical information on each patient that everyone needs to know,
