We live in a world of computers, tablets, smartphones, and social media. Digital technology is so thoroughly merged into our everyday lives that being less connected is nearly unimaginable. But how exactly has this digital revolution affected the way we conduct health care?
We are in the centre of a nationwide integration of digital technology and health delivery via the electronic health record (EHR). It is hoped that we will have a nationwide EHR system within the next decade.

The pace of change has significantly enhanced since the January 2009 passage of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH); a $30 billion endeavour to transform healthcare delivery through widespread use of EHR technology.
Issues with EHR / PCEHR
Concerns have been elevated about the possible for harms and unintended consequences associated with the introduction of the PCEHR and the need for preventive action to avoid these. Much interaction with EHR is less than ideal. An evaluation of the Record found instances of incomplete and inaccurate data. System crashes paralyse clinics, multiple system passwords create redundancy and frustration, poor system response times test user patience, and overreliance on EHR instead of direct specialty communication can impair patient care. Accuracy and currency of information will be a particular challenge for the PCEHR when there are numerous sources of data. The test will be to synchronise this data to build a general picture of the medicines that are being taken.
In spite of these problems, there are advantages to using EHR, and its sustained existence is as evident as the Internet’s.
Establishing trust in the security, accuracy and prevalence of the data and statistics in the system will be critical.

The Electronic Health Record system, known as EHRs, has changed how patients and health providers communicate as a whole. It has taken information technology to a different spectrum, and has helped patients become more aware of their health history and health conditions. Throughout the years, EHRs systems have been crucially ridicule in the medical world, due to lack of knowledge, high expenses, and apprehension among health providers. Because there will always be challenges when new technology starts to expand in any type of establishment. I believe that EHRs serves a great purpose in health care despite its delays.

EHR was created to have a technical way to securely exchange private and personal medical health information in hopes to improve the quality of care, decrease medical errors, limiting paper use, reduction of health care cost, and increasing a person access to affordable health care. A mandate was created for EHR stating that health records can be accessible to all facilities with patients having the capability to access their own health records at any time. According to Sewell & Thede, in 2004, President Bush called for adoption of interoperable electronic health records for most Americans by 2014.
