The term is most commonly associated with police services of a state that are authorized to exercise the police power of that state within a defined legal or territorial area of the responsibility. The police forces are often defined as being separate from military or other organizations involved in the defense of the state against foreign aggressors. Law enforcement, however constitutes only part of policing activity (Carter & Radelet, 1999).
Policing has included and array of activities in different situations. It is widely regarded that the police in any given society have a very difficult job to obtain. Dealing with criminals and placing themselves in harm way on a on a day to day basis. Sometimes it seems very difficult, because it is an underlying sentiment in the general public that the job of law enforcement officers is relatively straightforward. In addition, police are divided into two roles based on how they perform their duties. The two roles of a police officer are a public servant and a crime fighter. A police officer whose role as a public servant is to serve all types of people, as well as criminals. Public servants regularly provide advice and make judgments as to the degree of risk they should take with the public. Many decisions involving risk are relatively easy to make, but others are complex and significant consequences (Kernaghan and Langford, 2016). These risks may involve using force and the consequences could be media backlash or a potential termination. Public servants abide by the oath and uphold the integrity and honor of the organization as an officer. Also, public servant officers like to play it safe because they like to be known as ordinary citizens who like to go home to their
The role of police in their communities and society as a whole, is an interesting and unique position. They are citizens that are responsible for policing fellow, equal citizens and are the extensive arm of the government. Police are required to enforce laws set by the state, regardless of the effectiveness or rationality of the laws and any negative consequences they cause. These consequences often result in racial disparities in the criminal justice system between blacks and whites or an unequal concentration of poor Americans in police interactions. With such apparent injustices, it
The Frontline documentary, Policing the police, makes the argument that there are many problems with police departments across the United States and uses his correspondence with the Newark, New Jersey Police Department to make that point.
Patrol and criminal investigation used to dominate policing. Uniformed officers would roam the streets interrupting crime and trying to prevent them from happening. There are different strategies to policing. These strategies include patrol, special operations, and investigations. There are changes that can be made in laws to impact the
Even though some people see police as power abusers, police are good because try to help their communities despite all the danger they can get themselves into. When we hear the term police officer, we automatically picture a person wearing a navy blue uniform, holding about twenty-three pounds of equipment and have an air of authority surrounding them. We look to them for protection against all the negative people and influences that are out in our world. Officers have to be smart and tough enough to withstand the constant threats that put their lives on the line. Jerome Skolnick argued that police culture rises from the common tensions that are associated with being a police officer.
Police sub-cultures are defined as a blue wall so to speak. It is an unspoken rule between law enforcement officers and their loyalty to each other. It is a bond that law enforcement officers form after working together for a long period of time. When the bond has been formed between law enforcement officers, their loyalty to each other is stronger than the sworn oath taken to become a police officer. This does not affect their agency’s code of ethics, but it affects their own morals.
The dictionary definition of the police is “the organized civil force of a state, concerned with maintenance of law and order, the detection and prevention of crime, etc,” (Collins English Dictionary, 2002). This definition states the minimum of what the police actually do. Providing support for families, protecting society from criminals and responding to calls 24 hours a day 7 days a week are just some of the other roles that police have to deal with.
