William Hundert (Kevin Kline) is a passionate and principled Classics professor who is enthusiastic about the start of the school year. His class turns out to be a strict yet inspiring lesson for the new students arriving at St. Benedict's Academy. It is here we are introduced to the party-minded Louis Masoudi (Jesse Eisenberg), the introverted Martin Blythe (Paul Dano), and the studious Deepak Mehta (Rishi Mehta), all of whom are incredibly intelligent. He inspires all of them to study hard in order to become one of the three contestants for The Emperor's Club and be crowned "Mr. Julius Caesar", a competition which pits the top three students of his class in a contest where they will be asked questions regarding the Classics. An enthusiastic Hundert agrees to host once again. And so the Emperor's Club contest is again played, albeit the crowd being the students and their respective family and friends. Masoudi quickly falls on the first question after talking on his cell phone and then declaring himself to be the next Julius Caesar, showing that despite his success, he has forgotten most of his Classics. Again the main competition is between Mehta and Bell as both still remember (or studied) their lessons from Hundert's class. Sadly, despite Hundert's belief that Bell has changed, he is able to perceive that Bell is cheating, this time through a man telling him answers from the book through an earpiece. Hundert poses another unofficial question regarding the plaque over his door - see Shutruk-Nahhunte. Despite supportive shouts from his classmates that this one is easy and they all know this one, Bell again does not know the answer and loses to Mehta again. Once more, only Hundert is aware that Bell cheated. After the competition ends and Bell recongratulates Mehta as "Julius Caesar", Bell announces that he will be running for a seat in the U.S. Senate and stresses the importance of government funding of education. Hundert finally sees that Bell only used the event to drum up support for his campaign and to get financial
Making a movie to be watch worthy for a good book is almost rare. Nevertheless, it is common to hear those who like reading to pries a movie, which made based on a book that they read. Yet, when it comes to William Shakespeare, it is different because the plies that he wrote are just a ready script for acting. Julius Caesar is one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays because of many reasons and one of them is that the real story was a critical point in history. In fact, the play reflects an actual occasion of Shakespeare’s time and that is one way this great writer express the concerns of the people about the succession, as Professor of English literature at University of St. Thomas, Ann Bradley says. In this essay, I will examine some of the
The sun beat down on the warriors, the heat of the stone burning their feet. Slowly, ever so slowly it seemed, they walked, joyous music playing as people celebrated. But what were they celebrating? Nero thought. He looked out ahead, watching the progression crawl forward. Some of the men waved to the crowd on either side, making children squeal in delight. Others trudged ahead, heads bent to the ground. Helmets adorned most, shining blindingly in the mid morning sun. Sweat dripped down Nero’s spine, making him shiver despite the heat. He adjusted his grip on his trident, then readjusted. Nerves can do that to a person. His impending doom was mere hours away, blinding his sensibility everyone called worthy of the gods themselves. But where had that sensibility gotten him? Nowhere.
In Danielle Evans’s collection of short stories Before You Suffocate Your Own Fool Self, the story “The King of a Vast Empire” talks about how traumatic events affect a family’s bond. The main trauma in this story is a car accident that haunts this family. Liddie, Terrance, and their parents got in a car accident one night. The dad was driving the car when he was going around a dark curve in the road and hit another car. The other car was stopped in the middle on the road because there was a fallen lumber in the middle of the road that their dad was trying to remove. The other car did not have their emergency lights on. When the dad hit the car, all of the kids in the backseat was killed
In Myths of Empire: Domestic Politics and International Ambition, author Jack Snyder seeks to explain why overexpansion has been so common among the great powers. Sometimes, Snyder argues, states over-expand so aggressively that their actions risk the survival of the states themselves, as was the case of Germany and Japan in the World War II era. Snyder explains that the ‘central myth of empire,’ which he considers ‘defensive realism,’ is that states think that their security can only be safeguarded through further expansion. Snyder explains that this myth of empire is the counterproductive aggressive foreign policy that was the major force that propelled
Julie Otsuka’s novel When the Emperor was Divine leads the reader through the journey of one family that represents many as they are placed in an internment camp for the crime of being Japanese. Otsuka brings to light the persecution of Japanese-Americans through her use of symbols prominent throughout the book. Some of the most important being the symbol of stains, their family dog, and horses. Each has a double-meaning pointing towards the theme of widespread racism. Racism that led many Japanese-Americans into believing that they were guilty.

The Japanese-American author, Julie Otsuka, wrote the book When the Emperor was Divine. She shares her relative and all Japanese Americans life story while suffering during World War II, in internment camps. She shares with us how her family lived before, during, and after the war. She also shares how the government took away six years of Japanese-American lives, falsely accusing them of helping the enemy. She explains in great detail their lives during the internment camp, the barbed wired fences, the armed guards, and the harsh temperatures. When they returned home from the war they did not know what to believe anymore. Either the Americans, which imprisoned them falsely, or the emperor who they have been told constantly not to believe, for the past six years imprisoned. Japanese-Americans endured a great setback, because of what they experienced being locked away by their own government.
I disagree with a child’s whole future resting on just one test. That puts so much pressure on children to do well at such a young age. I can see why children get depressed, if
Julian Caesar" competition, when Mr. Hundert talks to Sedgewick about the device in his ear. Mr. Hundert suspected Sedgewick was cheating and Sedgewick confirmed it during their interaction. Page 198 says, "how long have you been hard of hearing?". His reply was, "very good I thought you might have known."… then Sedgewick says "and I see that you have not changed either,". On page 171 after the first competition where Sedgewick was found cheating he got caught, now time has passed and he is cheating and gets caught again. This interaction supports the central idea that people do not change as time
What kind of technology in the Roman Empire affect its growth the most? I will be investigating from the start of the Roman Empire in 753 BCE to when the Western Roman Empire fell in 476 CE. This investigation will have a broad scope while investigating and include things from the Roman Legion to aqueducts and concrete. This investigation will not include technology that was not widely used to better the Roman Empire. The research question will answer my question by conducting research on how different groups of technology made the Roman Empire better based off of their potential uses and different contributions to Roman society.
The first student I will talk about is the first one to be seen in the movie. This is Claire Standish. Claire is one of the popular girls in the school.
The reason for this reflection is to review what has happened in a deeper level than just summarizing what has happened over the course of this project. During the weeks learned some things, not just from the book that I was reading, but also from participating in a group. The lessons I learned led to my group being successful in the few goals that were created. All of the goals were met in different ways whether it would be just finishing the book or us getting up in front of the whole class to present the google slides that we created.
The Emperor’s Club is a film that addresses many moral and social aspects that are central to contemporary society’s moral controversy. Can morals be properly instilled in a young person outside of religion? Can our future decisions be predicted based on our current character? Can our current character even be changed or molded? Can morals be learned through studying the classics? The Emperors Club’s main characters are Mr. Hundert a teacher of classics at a prestigious preparatory school, and an unruly or misunderstood student, Sedgwick Bell. Their characters seem to perpetually butt heads, or at least be contrasting moral characters.
In William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, great emphasis is placed on what it means to be a good Roman. Honour, honesty, service, and dignity were among the qualities considered virtuous and which contributed to a sense of Roman duty. Along with the virtues, Shakespeare also seems to examine the nature of philosophical Stoicism. The treatment of constancy and Stoicism has many thematic and moral implications in Julius Caesar. In analysing Brutus’ supposedly noble character, Shakespeare calls into question Stoicism’s place as a guide for human conduct.
“The Last Emperor” was a very interesting film, rich in historical truth and an accurate portrayal of past events that occurred in China during the 1900s. The story was very easy to follow and gave a more modernized approach to teaching the impacts of historical proceedings by using the English language but not forgetting to keep the facts in order. This approach gave me the opportunity to see the different actors as if it were truly identical to what this time period was all about. Given that the plot was centralized around Puyi, the last Emperor of China, and the director did an excellent job making the movie fit the timeline.
