English Language Arts Curriculum Essay Do you remember being in high school and always wondering how the things you learned would ever be useful in the real world? This thought probably occurred very often in english class while reading Shakespeare and learning to write research papers. However as you got older you probably realized that although you may not quote Othello regularly, or write facebook posts in iambic pentameter, you did use the writing and presentation skills you learned in your professional and personal life. What if those skills were a greater focus in english classes instead of grammar lessons and vocabulary lists? To present themselves as capable, young professionals students must learn how to create a “personal brand”. I believe that this would be a very easy and beneficial unit to incorporate into english classes. Activities such as defining identity, creating “mind maps” and writing personal reflective pieces would ultimately lead to students creating a resume and writing a paper on their “brand”. Presenting yourself is not only important in the professional world but also in apply for college, a daunting task that seems to hang over the heads of high school students. By creating personals brands students will be have a head start on their essays because they will know how to not only present themselves as individuals, but how to market their unique skills in the most effective way possible. This will add a level of maturity to their essays which will make them stand out to admissions officers as not only well educated but self aware candidates. Marketing yourself is not the only important writing skill in the professional world. Correct grammar and sophisticated vocabulary lend themselves to the image of a capable young person. While grammar and vocabulary are emphasized in high school english classes they are often presented in a way that does not encourage students to use them to improve their writing.
