The epic quest had begun just a few weeks ago, and already we were at the apex. The villain was just beyond that far, oak-wood door, and our small, motley crew of different skills and styles had perseveringly pushed our way past his endless seas of minions to reach this point. Just in front of the door curled a large, black-scaled beast of a wyrm, and as Brandon accidentally kicked a rock, the sound echoing overloud through the corridor that widened into a huge, circular room, a flash of red was seen as the being opened its eyes and stared at us for a moment, unmoving. With an explosive sound of ice and fire colliding, clear spikes expanded and punctured every bit of the wyrm, effectively killing it. The group exchanged glances and we continued on towards the door. We opened it, but there was no dramatic display of wall torches or creeping shadows, no grand throne and no evil laugh. Instead, there was just a man. No black cloak and hood. No monstrous being. Just a man, and he was dressed in simple clothing. “Congrats, you finished the dungeon,” he said in a bored tone. We were all unsure what was going on. This wasn’t the climax we’d worked towards! “Go choose a prize,” he added, gesturing widely towards a table cluttered with all sorts of baubles and toys. “Whatever happened to the final boss and stuff?” I protested, and the apparent dungeonmaster rolled his eyes. “Life doesn’t work like that, kiddo. There isn’t a such thing as arch-enemies or final enemies. Just small daily struggles involving other people, and most struggles against yourself.
