Caterpillar's legacy started in the late 1800’s when Benjamin Holt built his first ever combined harvester. In the early 1900's, Holt tested what would become the first steam-powered track type prototype, and two years later he would introduce a gasoline engine. Caterpillar became a trademark name in 1910 bringing with it a track type tractor capable of completing a job that took more than four horses to do. The history of Caterpillar is all about creating change one breakthrough at a time by building new infrastructures, problem-solving, innovating, and testing new equipment (Caterpillar Inc, n.d). Having in place a method that communicates the companies values through a code of conduct, is a stepping stone to ensure employees practice ethical behaviors. Within the code of conduct Caterpillar identifies that all individuals are to follow these guidelines and principles and action them every day by offering guidance on the behaviors of those who support the values to include those who hold special positions of responsibility. Furthermore, Caterpillar takes it a step further and publishes their code of conduct in over eighteen languages ensuring the ethical standards are upheld throughout its global sector. Every organization establishes principles that dictates the behavior of the organization. Through their Code of Conduct, Caterpillar envisions an environment that creates a culture where every employee takes pride in their work. This pride has an altering effect on the daily performance of every employee in the workplace.
