INTRODUCTION Diabetes mellitus, known simply as diabetes, is a widespread disease in which blood glucose levels increase due to a deficiency in insulin secretion or a decreased cell response to insulin (Reece et al., 2011). Blood glucose is not regulated, as the insufficient amount of insulin created is unable to process and break down the blood glucose in our body (Bailey, 2008). The two common types of diabetes mellitus are type 1 and type 2, in which, respectively, insulin production is absent and there is cell resistance to insulin (Kishore, 2012). Since there is no current cure for diabetes (Vinik et al., 2004), the disease is controlled by insulin injections, medication, anti-diabetic drugs, healthy eating and exercise (Bailey,…show more content…
Also, the article by Lu et al. included a comparison of their study with eight other clinical studies that constituted cinnamon extract and type 2 diabetes (of which the work by Khan et al. is a part), again proving the validity of the website. I ranked this scientific journal article first out of the five websites because it was a legitimate, and scientifically supported, primary reference. Website 2: Complementary alternative medicine use in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus in Erzurum, Turkey (Arýkan et al., 2008) This website was an original journal article that constituted a descriptive study to calculate the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) among children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) in Erzurum province, Turkey and to determine the types of CAM used (Arýkan et al., 2008). The study was carried out through the use of a questionnaire taken by the parents of the diagnosed children, followed by a statistical analysis by the researchers. I ranked this article second on the basis that it was a primary source, a firsthand study with original data and results, but it was a study that produced results that were not necessarily validated by others’
