Nothing is more enduring than a mother- daughter relationship. This bond is specifically explored in the books, The Battle Hymn of a Tiger Mother by Amy Chua and The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. Authors of these books precisely show the complexity of this type of relationship. Chua and Tan show the reader how a mother and daughter can hurt one other but ultimately forgiveness finds its way through. The similarities in these books include the difficulty of communication between the mother and daughter and their sacrifices for love. The difference between these books is the mothers’ outlooks of the role women play in society.

Sophia always impressed anyone that heard her play the violin. Yet again, Chua was not surprised because she knew all along that her daughter had the ability and potential to exceed in the performing arts. In The Joy Luck Club, Waverly Jong is having a hard time telling her mother that she is going to marry a man named Rich. This is because Waverly believes that her mother does not think anyone is good for anything. After pondering and worrying, Waverly realizes that she must tell her mother that she is getting married. Waverly storms into her mother’s house and finds her mother sleeping on a couch. Waverly confesses that she will marry Rich because she loves him. During this confession, Waverly expresses to her mother how she really feels about her. Her mother is horrified of Waverly’s views on her and becomes upset. There has been a misunderstanding. Waverly stared into her mother’s eyes and realized that she is just an old crabby woman who has waited for Waverly to invite her in and talk to her like a normal daughter would talk to her mother. Both books contain feelings held in and not expressed. These are sole reasons for the problems between the mothers and the daughters.

The Joy Luck Club is the first novel by Amy Tan, published in 1989. The Joy Luck Club is about a group of Chinese women that share family stories while they play Mahjong. When the founder of the club, Suyuan Woo, died, her daughter June replaced her place in the meetings. In her first meeting, she finds out that her lost twin sisters were alive in China. Before the death of Suyuan, the other members of the club located the address of June’s half-sisters. After that, they send June to tell her half-sisters about her mother’s life. In our lives there are events, and situations that mark our existence and somehow determine our life. In this novel, it shows how four mothers and their daughters were impacted by their tradition and beliefs. In the traditional Asian family, parents define the law and the children are expected to follow their requests and demands; respect for one’s parents and elders is critically important. Traditions are very important because they allow us to remember the beliefs that marked a whole culture.

The Joy Luck Club continues with Lindo and Waverly Jong. As a child, Lindo had a pre-arranged marriage, which turned out poorly. She wants her daughter to be able to have a happy marriage with a husband she chooses herself. Throughout Lindo's unhappy marriage, she often wondered why she should have "an unhappy life so someone else could have a happy one"(53). Lindo's thoughts reveal that she wished to live her own life and have the ability to make her own decisions. This desire gave Lindo the extra confidence to figure out a way to escape the marriage, in which she did successfully. When Waverly shows her mother the sweater that Rich bought her, she tells her mother that it was from his heart which is "why [Lindo] worries" (186). Flannery O’Connor’s Wise Blood and Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go feature two young women, Sabbath Lily Hawks and Kathy H., whose nontraditional childhoods affect their relationships with others, their self-confidence, and their perception of family. While Sabbath and Kathy both come from abnormal homes, their respective upbringings inform the way they relate to the world and how they show affection. Sabbath will show love and attention towards anyone or anything. Kathy becomes giving in every sense of the word: a member of an organ farm, she is internally and eternally magnanimous. Her charity extends to her emotionality as she puts herself behind those whom she cares about, like her friends Ruth and Tommy. Structurally and emotionally, a “traditional” family is consistent, dependent, supportive, and trustworthy and because Sabbath and Kathy did not have traditional families, they must go to extremes in order to feel important, loved, and wanted.

Emotions are expressed immediately at the beginning of the writing to have his readers grasp his feelings of the situation. Goldstein compares Chua’s “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother” a “depiction of Chinese-style extreme parenting” (Goldstein 272). He then continues to maintain the reader’s attention by explaining Chua’s parenting skills by addressing the fact how the children cannot have play dates, or even watch television. Goldstein inspires his readers by giving individual’s personal experiences that reflect how they became successful.

Most of these relationships, already very fragile, become distanced through heritage, history and expectations. These differences cause reoccurring clashes between two specific mother-daughter bonds. Lindo tries to instill Chinese qualities in her daughter while Waverly refuses to recognize her heritage and concentrates on American culture.
