In Chapter 23, we talked about the many different ways that a population can evolve over time. Relating to the topic of this chapter, an academic journal published by Karasawa et al. (2015) discussed how different species of scorpions existed on different islands of Japan and Taiwan. From what we previously know about evolution, these scorpions could have been the same species at an early point in history but due to the founder effect, one species might have established a new population. This could have been a result of the islands being separated by the Kerama Gap, a specific waterway that separates these two species (Karasawa et al. 2015). It is a possibility that these species of scorpions have a common ancestor and because of the changing
I read the book “Scorpion Shards” that was written by Neal Shusterman. This book or plot is really fast pace, unique, and keeps you thinking and on the edge of your seat for the entire book. You never really know how the characters make their decisions or how they’re going to end up at the end. In this book six teens suffer from supernatural tragedies or powers that were caused by a supernova sixteen light-years away that eliminated the night sky. Dillon, Deanna, Winston, Tori, Michael, and Lourdes are the six teenagers that were affected by the supernova. These six have never met each other before, but they all unexplainably meet each other.
In the story, “The House of the Scorpion”, written by Nancy Farmer, the main character is named Matt. The story takes place in the future around Mexico in a city named Opium. The main problem in the book is Matt is a clone and people do not like clones because clones act weird because they have an injection when they are first made that corrupts their body and makes them do things that humans don’t normally do. But Matt is different, he didn’t get the injection but people still think he is like the other clones, disgusting and brain-dead. The problem is solved when everyone is at a party for an old man named El Patron. He died and is having a party thrown in memory of him and El Patron left a note that told everyone to drink a certain wine but the wine was poisoned. Everyone died except for Matt, his “mother” Celia, his friend Maria, and a few others. Everyone is dead so the few that survived decide to start a new life where no one knows who they really are.
The House of the Scorpion is an adolescent novel that follows the life of Matteo Alacran, a genetic clone of the infamous and wealthy opium dealer El Patron. The novel is set in an undetermined future time when an entire swath of land between Mexico (called Aztlan in the novel) and the United States has been turned over to drug dealers who mass-produce opium. Their "country" is aptly named Opium, nicknamed Dreamland, and is reigned over by El Patron. El Patron started poor but slowly established power and wealth through his drug trade, rising in the ranks of the cartel. In a deal when he promised to patrol the borders between the two countries with his own crew of border men (called the Farm Patrol), he was gifted the conflict-ridden portion
Waking up in the early hours of the morning for school sometimes seems like the hardest thing to do, mostly it’s because most of us are not getting enough sleep and getting enough sleep is a biological necessity. Sleep is just as important as the air you breath. Teenagers need on average nine and ¼ hours of sleep per night in order for high performance and brain development but the average amount of sleep for teens is 7 hours or less a night.
them in deep sabotage operations in order to conduct these raids before the invasion had begun, to stop Saddam from ordering the Army to conduct Chem and Bio warfare on Kurdistan as it had done before. (Tucker & Faddis 2009, pg. 38) When they had reported this to Washington the unwillingness to conduct these operations, they could not believe that these men would refuse to fight or conduct these operations. The Scorpions had a great deal of support from Washington especially when it came to funding. The camp in Turkey that had been established on a portion of a military installation had vehicles and tanks as well as attack helicopters, hardware that was never utilized by the Scorpions due to their ineffectiveness. (Tucker & Faddis 2009, pg.
Phylogeography is a field of study that implements biogeography and genetics to understand the geographic distribution of a species. It is concerned with historical principles and processes that influence evolution and speciation. The tiger is an evolutionary wonder; it is a prime example of the responsiveness that some species have to changing climatic conditions. The tiger once had the largest geographic distribution of all cat species; subspecies adaptations allowed them to live in a large range of habitats throughout the Asian continent making it a perfect candidate for the study of phylogeography. This review will examine the evolutionary history of the tiger and will explain how the species was affected by climatic fluctuations and biogeographic processes during the Plestocene epoch.
Cobras, with menacing hoods around their heads raised ready to strike, are one of the most dangerous snakes. A mongoose is a highly social and clever animal that is similar to the weasel, yet belongs to the same family as the leopard and hyena. Mongooses hunt small animals and insects, as well as the deadly King Cobra (Mongoose Facts 1). The story “Rikki-tikki-tavi” by Rudyard Kipling tells about a young mongoose who kills a cobra to keep the garden free. The book and the movie of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi have many similarities and a few differences. The book and the movie have numerous similarities among the setting of the story, the characters involved, and the conflict of the story.

Hi my name is the "Blue Scorpion" I live in Manhattan New York. I'm just started to feel a little different after my father's death. A myth in my family is going around that I'm experiencing a new life like my father took over my body. Misshel she's a paranormal activities investigator. She told me that I'm about to get superpowers because my father was a superhero and had superpowers and it was I'm my DNA. She also told the government about me, and since they didn't have powerful weapons, to fight in ww2.
Often, a dystopian society is plagued by an evil power that thinks only to keep itself in place; however, they do not always accomplish what they need. The novel The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer is about a boy named Matt, but little does he know that he is the clone of the infamous dictator and drug lord, El Patron. So when Matt, with the help of El Patron’s grandchildren, accidentally makes it into El Patron’s house, he finds that his world has been flipped upside down, and with no way out, he is going to have to fight for his life almost every day. In the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, Guy Montag, a fireman, encounters an odd girl named Clarisse, she seems to have wisdom far beyond her years, and almost anyone else Guy has
The Bunostegos have knobbly growths on their skull and are the largest recognizable reptiles ever seen in the Pareiasaur group, which are plant eating creatures. The Bunostegos traveled a remote desert approximately 260 million years ago. The unusual reptile belongs to the Pareiasaur group, they thrived during the Permian period. The cow sized creature has been named Bunostegos, which means “Knobby roof”. Researchers supports the idea that there was a remote desert in the middle of Pangea with unusual animals. It is possible that the bony knobs on the skull of Pareiasaurs did not serve as a protective function, but were purely ornamental. The knobbly growths remarkably vary in size and shape between different species. The long period of isolation
In the case of ring species, natural selection and sexual selection each play a role in the divergence of ring species. Selective pressures allowed one phenotype to survive better than others in a certain area; sexual selection could cause divergence because organisms choose mates based on phenotypes. In the case of salamanders, natural selection affected divergence because organisms with certain coloration survived better in coastal or inland environments. In warblers, sexual selection and natural selection seem to play a part in the divergence of the ring species, as forest density and migration distance is variable and affects survival of the species. Molecular and morphological evidence can be used to support multiple species by showing
The genus Tarsius of which we have fossils from the Middle Eocene in China, the Early Miocene in northwestern Thailand, and the Middle Miocene in northern Thailand, allow us to compare ancient characters with many modern extant tarsiers. Tarsiers are subject to high levels of predation as they inhabit a specific biotope and are subject to avian predators as well as ground dwelling species (Řeháková-Petru, Peške, and Daněk 2012).
In the excerpt “On the Doctrine of the Feeling of Power”, it reads, “An easy prey is something contemptible for proud natures; they take delight only at the sight of unbroken persons who could become their enemies”. I do not agree with Nietzsche's ideas on power, for his philosophy seems to be “keep your friends close and your enemies closer”. My ideas on power are more so like El Patron’s ideas from The House of the Scorpion. In the book, The House of the Scorpion, El Patron’s ideas on power are as follows, “Get rid of your enemies when you can.” These two quotes are distinctly different. Personally, I agree more with El Patron’s take on power, for due to personal experiences, my thoughts are that ones who seek power do not take delight
