The excerpts found in The Holy Rule of St. Benedict helped guide the monks with serenity and peace, order, and self-sufficiency. “... Deus, in adjutorium meum intende; Domine, ad adjuvandum me festina, there is next to be said three times, Domine, labia mea aperies, et os meum annuntiabit laudem tuam [These were prayers from the Divine Office from Psalm 50[51];17” (Rule of Benedict IX). The monks accomplished serenity and peace by reciting this Psalm because it was considered part of the Divine Office which were a set of prayers. The Divine Office was prayed regularly- eight times per day. St. Benedict arranged an organized albeit strict schedule for the monks to follow that orders a time table revolved around the Divine Office. From six to
Netherlandish use of triptychs—three distinct art pieces that simultaneously exist as individual images and as a collective picture—usually were presented as devotional images and altarpieces. Joachim Patinir’s triptych, The Penitence of Saint Jerome (c. 1512-1515, Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY), employs both the same form of traditional triptychs and the Netherlandish tradition of extended panoramic landscapes; however, the triptych breaks traditional convention.
Born circa 1020 in Sovana, Tuscany, Pope Gregory VII is one of the great reforming popes, and is best known for his part in the Investiture Controversy, which was his dispute with with Henry IV that reinforced the primacy of papal authority. He excommunicated Henry three times because Henry was getting out of hand and the political struggles between the Catholic Church and his empire. Although, Gregory was also despised during his reign by some for his expansive use of papal powers, this caused his memory to be remembered on numerous occasions in later generations, both good and bad, which was often reflected in writings of the Catholic Church. Gregory was accused of necromancy, torture, attempted assassinations, unjust excommunication,
In Homily 33, delivered in 591, Pope Gregory took the step of identifying Luke's unnamed sinner with Mary Magdalen:
This proves that they took faith and religion very seriously. In addition to document (8), monks did not only have religious responsibilities, but also had to participate in work and studies in the fields, workshops, and scriptoria (Pearson World History, 2011). Also, document (5) explains how the church controls the daily life of people. The observance of the Truce of God explains the rules of keeping the holy days. It states that peace should be observed on Sunday, Friday, Saturday, and days of fasting.
Ever since the Bretton Woods agreement in 1944, the U.S dollar became the world’s currency. Bretton Woods agreement was basically an agreement on which every country currency would be back up by the dollar, due to the fact that after WWII United States was the only one with the biggest gold reserve in the world. Although it was proposed as a good idea it had its flaws for one even though it help the U.S and other countries there was simply not enough gold to continue backing up the dollar value. Which lead to President Richard Nixon to abolish the gold standard economy. His abolish of a gold standard economy lead to a new proposal on which the dollar would be back by.
"What dear brothers, is more delightful than the voice of the Lord calling to us?" ~ Saint Benedict. Benedict was born on March 2, 480 in Norcia, Italy. As a child, Benedict attended primary school in his hometown. However, he then traveled to Rome to continue his studies in literature and law. Appalled by Rome's political issues, Benedict decided to leave the city and reside with a group of priests. In the ministry, he preformed his first miracle. Benedict restored a broken wheat sifter to its perfect condition. Astonished by his actions, Benedict set out to dwell in a cave isolated from society. Consumed by desolation, Benedict's only contact with the outside world was a fellow monk named Romanus. He bestowed Benedict with basic necessities
Do you know how many of your County neighbors are barely making ends meet—often not earning enough to cover just one unexpected expense? A recent survey revealed that about 46% of Americans don’t feel they have enough money to cover a $400 emergency expense. Rather than paying it outright, these individuals and families have to put the expense on a credit card or simply cannot cover it.
After centuries of expansion and contraction against the Empire of Islam, the Crusades were the most effective method to spread Christianity across Europe (486). A pious and wise monk, Saint John Climacus wrote, Ladder of Devine Ascent in the sixth century to teach monks (509). Centuries later, an artist painted an illustration for the book by the same name, which depicts an arduous climb toward Salvation, with dangers or distractions that could result in a fall from grace into hell (511). To counter pagan resistance in 601 C.E., Pope Gregory wrote Advice to the English Church, to continue some pagan traditions (502).
Monasticism or monarchism is literally the act of "dwelling alone". The Rule of St Benedict played an important role in Europe during the middle ages, monks were able to preserve many classical works from both the Romans and the Greeks while acting as copiers that produced books, they were the most pious of the church and acted as a model for the average person to strive for. It dignified manual labor, the rule acted as a written constitution and rule of law for most monasteries, policies could be seen as harsh by some but the overall message is built around a positive spirit of reconciliation. The Rule of St. Benedict most significant role for the development of European civilization was education.
The Rules of Saint Benedict were for the first time monks. The significant of the Rule of Saint Benedict is for a person to regard the scriptures as sacred and to spend time with God in not only reading the scripture but studying the scriptures in a manner of hiding them in the heart as well as obeying the Word of God. The Rule of Saint Benedict also taught discipline in the way of shutting out distractions and the sound of the world to hear from God and meditate on understanding the scriptures. Sometimes the monks stilled away to the mountains, and other times they went to the monastery.

A[C1] death penalty is a sentence of execution served to culprits found guilty of murder or a capital crime. It is a type of capital punishment. [C2] Over the years, there has been different views on whether murder culprits deserve death punishments or not and while some of these debates have yielded positive results, some countries continue to allow this form of capital punishment. The death penalty is a barbaric and atrocious form of capital punishment and because of its nature of unfairness, immoral values, lack of deterrence and so many other reasons, it has been abolished in majority of countries around the globe.[C3] However, it is still used in about 58 countries. This form of punishment includes shooting to death, lethal injections, hanging, stoning and so on. [C4]
The five Benedictine Values are incorporated into every class as a way to better ourselves. Each is defined from the college website and includes topics that are important for continuing my education based upon what I have learned in class. The first one is community, which is creating an environment that promotes a sense of community by being responsible and supporting each other. To be a community we need to treat each other with love. Life chances is a part of being a community. Life Chances is where a person born into poverty stays in poverty. This is a phenomenon that refers to how families can never get out of poverty because it passes on to the next generation. Life chances are what each person is given to become something in life. Someone that has a lot of money has much better life chances than does someone born into poverty. A person born into poverty is more likely to remain in poverty. We can become a community by eliminating the lower, middle, and upper class in the United States. When we eliminate this monetary value we are just one big community that we are all open arms and willing to help anyone.
No one is free, even the birds are chained to the sky.” Bob Dylan said this probably not knowing its profound connection with George Orwell’s novel “1984”, but the as well could be in “1984”. Orwell depicts a totalitarian dystopian world where there is no freedom and citizens are being brainwashed constantly. Without any sense of individual fairness, people work for the party just like the gear wheels in a machine. In order to achieve this, the politicians in “1984” suppress people’s thinking and eliminate their freedom by creating fear through propaganda, strict laws and incessant surveillances.
