The Exploration of the tower of hanoi DULWICH COLLEGE BEIJING Introduction 3 Definition 4 History 5 Exploration 6 The Tower of Hanoi task 6 Introduction to Proof by Induction 6 Application 8 Proof by Induction 10 Conclusion 11 Introduction Nervous, excited and afraid. Standing in front of the classroom full of students that are amazingly talented in the mathematic field. I have joined this after school math session since I entered the IB years. As I am much older, I help the teacher organize math activities with these children. However, this is the first time I lead a session without a teacher. My partner and I have designed a game with the children which includes the tower of Hanoi. The tower of Hanoi has always been a challenge for me; therefore, I thought it would be interesting for these talented mathematician to give these discs a go. After briefly explaining the task of the tower of Hanoi, I handed each group their tower of Hanoi. They were asked to compete with other groups on the time taken to complete the task. Although, there were some clear winners, I’ve noticed the approach of this activity was not challenging enough for these mathematicians. Some students move the disc too quickly and without thinking; therefore, some winners are based on luck and lack of though. As a result, I changed the rule of the task – the group that completes the task with the least moves will be the winner. Expectedly, this change did make the task
The collapse of South Vietnam is proven to be very chaotic throughout the poem “Saigon Is Gone” and the transcript “Forgotten Ship: A Daring Rescue As Saigon Fell”.The word choices of these passages help contribute to the meanings of the two texts. The vocabulary and details from these narratives illustrate a scene of devastation and disorder for the reader.
NPR’s transcript “Forgotten Ship”: A Daring Rescue as Saigon Fall,”tells readers the the fall of saigon was chaotic and desperate. It’s shown as a chaotic time because of the amount of helicopters that were trying to land on the USS Kirk, Mr Paul Jacobs said “it looked like bees flying everywhere”. I’m inferring that the thoughts going through everyone's head is what is happening in Saigon. An example of the desperation in Saigon is when “a chinook came out...Hovers over the fantail, opened up its rear door and started dropping people out of it”. These people were so desperate they jumped out of a helicopter this is an insane example of desperation.
There is also another interesting finding concerning students’ performance in Task 2B (bead pattern A-B-C) and Task 2D (bead pattern A-A-B-B-B). According to our design estimation, the pattern A-B-C was considered of lower difficulty level. Surprisingly, Task 2D appeared to be easier for the participants than Task 2B.
Big Idea 3 is a visual art activity that relates to the concept of spatial relations, a tenet concerning connections between physical features, “where or way in which something is situated” (The Free Dictionary). Spatial learning involves “the ability to mentally manipulate objects and understand spatial relationships, which are important in a wide range of tasks, including reading maps and graphs and understanding diagrams showing how to put things together” (Harms, 2012). These skills are critical in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields (Harms, 2012). Students will draw a picture on a poster board, cut the picture into 10 pieces to create a puzzle, and then put the puzzle together. Puzzle play is “an important context for figuring out problems through reasoning” (National Science Foundation).
On November 14, 1965 the first battle of the Vietnam War had begun. This is a war between communism and democracy. The first major part of the war between the United States and Northern Vietnam was the Battle of Ia Drang. The battle erupted in the Ia Drang Valley of the Central Highlands. Lt. Col. Harold Gregory Moore took his 1st Battalion and 7th Calvary sent an assault near the Chu Pong hills. The North Vietnamese's 33rd regiment attacked our troops later that day. The fighting lasted all day and continued into the night however both sides were receiving support throughout the night and next day. Around noon on the 15th more companies arrived and helped Col. Moore giving us the upper hand. Once the three day battle ended, 834 were confirmed
It was the evening of November 1, 1995 when nineteen year old Stephen Lee Martino from Jay, Oklahoma turned on his radio. The news on the radio was news Stephen did not want to hear or even think about. The guy on the radio announces, "War has now started with Vietnam. Be prepared for a long war." Then "Click" the radio shut off.
Award-winning author Tim O'Brien (The Things They Carried, July, July) has incorporated his experience in Vietnam into several of his novels and short stories. Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1968, he served in the 23rd Infantry Division, also known as the Americal Division. It was a platoon from this group that had been responsible for the massacre at My Lai nearly a year before O'Brian's arrival in the same
The declaration of Vietnamese independence made by Ho Chi Minh in 1945 served as a milestone in what was a century-old struggle against foreign control. In its history Vietnam had spent 1000 years under control of the Chinese and had resisted this control vehemently. Revolts and rebellions against China finally lead to Vietnamese independence in the tenth century. In the thirteenth century the Vietnamese drove back Kublai Khan three times under the leadership Dao. Tran Hung Dao not only led the Vietnamese people in driving Kublai Khan back, but did so by pioneering the guerrilla warfare methods that would later be employed against both the French and the United States. It is thus evident from this brief history of Vietnams that its
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s Americans became uneasy not only about the troubled position of the United States in world affairs, but also about the disorder wrought at home byforeign entanglements. Vietnam, either because of the searing war experience itself or because of the lessons Americans later drew from the experience, drastically altered society during the1960s and 1970s. The belief in the right to influence the internal affairs of other countries led todisaster in Southeast Asia. This disaster would forever be known as the longest war in thenation 's history (lasted 25 years), in which the world 's most powerful military (United States)spent itself in a futile attempt to conquer the peasant population. Vietnam became an additional opponent in the containment of communism for America. Overlooking the native roots of the revolutionand the tenacity of the people fighting for their own land, American leaders are going to makethe mistake of looking at Vietnam from a globalist point-of-view, and the events through a ColdWar lens. Robert F. Kennedy in 1968, came to recognize this as their flaw in the war, he statedthat the United States had "misconceived the nature of the war" (Doc. E). Ultimately, theVietnam War would come to heighten tensions in the social, political, and economic aspects of the United States during the mid-1960s and early 1970s.
Ancient Vietnam had a special culture and economy, it was most important from 500 B.C to 1400 A.D. The Ancient Vietnamese was an amazing civilization. The Vietnamese were ruled by a combination of Vietnamese leaders and Chinese leaders, throughout the years. The Chinese ruled over the Vietnamese for almost 1,000 years. Their culture was greatly impacted by the Chinese and Asian cultures.
Imperialism was a process by which nations extended their power by gaining control over more land, conventionally it has been used to describe the mentality used to justify the subjugation and colonisation through which various European nations such as Spain and Great Britain formed empires encompassing large swathes of the globe, across all continents. According to general consensus, this “Age of Imperialism” came to an end in 1914 with nearly all of the large empires already in decline and World War One bringing increased social awareness of the subject races of such empires, however, there are some (such as historian R Khalidi) who believe that this attitude never really died out. While ideas of equality have certainly increased in the
Maya Lin Vietnam War Memorial: her design was moderate and nontraditional. The remembrance, in the event that you are new to it, is a cleaned black, V-formed stone section apparently ascending starting from the earliest stage. The quality of the rock appears differently in relation to delicateness of the grass and conveys a parity to both nature and building design. Upon it bears the names of more than 58,000 Americans who were killed or are missing. At the point when asked what moved the authorities to pick Lin's configuration, one authority expressed, "It is remarkably even, entering the earth as opposed to puncturing the sky.
The trail was the main supply route used by the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong to supply troops, weapons, and food in the south. When the trail was first beginning, it was one lane dirt and not groomed enough for cars to go on. Because of this people had to do all the work themselves. Most workers used bicycles to carry weapons and food to soldiers in South Vietnam (Targeting). “In August 1959, the first supplies from the North containing twenty boxes of rifles and ammunition were delivered to Viet Cong insurgents in Thua Thien Hue” (Ho 4). “By December 1959, the trail’s designed capabilities were being put into action. 1,667 infantry weapons, 788 machetes and swords, 188 kilograms of explosive and other military supplies had been dispensed
Robertson, 2001 also suggested that information processing system is not realistic due to the reason that it involves prime levels of motivation and arousal, the knowledge of a guaranteed solution in the Tower of Hanoi can explain individuals motivation and arousal as they are trying to solve the problem although in another problem where the knowledge of solution is unclear fatigue and boredom can take affect which therefore also suggest that it cannot be applied to other solutions.
As advertised by the creators of the game, “The only limits are your imagination” (Jens, Minecraft). This game is a prime example on how video games can stimulate the mind with techniques such as problem solving, collaboration, memorization, and multi-tasking.
