For most kids ages five to eighteen, the school environment is where they spend most of their time. Because of this, it is crucial for the child to believe and know that the environment they are in is safe. What can adults do to guarantee that peace of mind? They must make sure there are no outside threats to the children or school. This comes down to the FBI. The Federal Bureau of Investigation oversees investigating tips given to them about potential threats. However, they let one slip through with Nikolas Cruz and it ended in the death of fourteen children and three school staff members. People did say something. The FBI was just too preoccupied to do their job at hand: keep the people of America safe. The FBI’s slogan goes along with Source C which states, “School Safety: A Shared Responsibility”. That responsibility is shared between the public and the FBI. However, the bureau failed to uphold their end. Granted, the FBI can’t catch every single occurrence. They are busy people and they “can’t keep things from making the net” (Benner). According to the FBI director Christopher Wray, the agency receives, on average, 2,101 calls to the tip line each day (Kennedy). What’s a few slip-ups? The lives of innocent people, that’s what. It’s not as damaging if an average person has a slip-up, but an agency with the responsibility of the American people’s safety? Unacceptable. The public did everything they were supposed to; they saw something concerning and they reported it. However, it is a two-step process. First comes the tip, and then the FBI must decide to investigate it proficiently. That did not occur with the tips about Nikolas Cruz, and now, there are 17 funerals that came too soon.
