The Face of Lennon Help! Help! Help! The Beatles faced plenty of highs and plenty of lows throughout their careers, and the transition between each stage was always shaky and lined with turmoil. Perhaps the most evident of these transitions was between the years of 1964 and 1965. In this period, songs from A Hard Day’s Night and Help! clearly show that John Lennon, a member of the group since the very beginning, was facing difficult, emotional times. These three songs speak volumes for the trouble that Lennon was going experiencing: “You Can’t Do That”, “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away”, and “It’s Only Love”. The first of these songs is the one that helps to set the stage for next two: “You Can’t Do That”. Released as a part of the album A Hard Day’s Night in 1964, this song is a product of Lennon’s surroundings more than a product from Lennon himself. Having first touched down in the United States on February 7, 1964, John fell in love with it all. Since Rock and Roll was on its last leg in the States, the Beatles were welcomed with excitement and a wave of energy. Despite only having stayed until February 22, Lennon was moved by the momentum the United States gave them. Only three days later, the Beatles went on to record “You Can’t Do That” on February 25. Written by the ever impressionable John, this song clearly reflects the burst of energy brought about from the trip to the States and his love for American Rock. This song uses the most basic and iconic percussive
In “Let Prisoner’s Take College Courses”, John Lennon argues the concept of online educational programs for inmates. In this article, Lennon explains how workers in prisons support and allow the use of TVs in cells because TVs reduce the amount of time to create violence. Though, the televisions could have a much better use, such as free, pre-recorded university lectures to help the prisoners learn. Years ago, educational programs for inmates were a key component, but legislation squashed out the ability for prisoners to learn. Currently, very few prisoners are able to participate in these classes, though, the prisoners rarely are reincarcerated because of taking these courses. Governor Andrew M. Cuomo attempted to create more educational programs
The Beatles are one of the most innovative rock bands of all time. They have not only changed the way rock and roll is looked at, but also the way that the music is recorded. They have influenced the artists of the 60s and the 70s, and also many generations later and to come. Originating from Liverpool, England, the Beatles, or the Fab Four, consists of Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. Topping the charts in ’63 with “Love Me Do,” and bringing in the highest rated viewing in history while performing on the Ed Sullivan Show, the Beatles are definitely a band that broke the sound barrier of rock

The day is June 14, 1964 and outside the Southern Cross Hotel in Melbourne are three hundred policeman and one hundred soldiers trying to hold back some ten thousand screaming, hysterical fans in what can only be called Beatlemania. The Beatles were a pop music group who gained such popularity that they caused mass hysteria wherever they went. John Lennon, Ringo Starr, George Harrison, and Paul McCartney were the four members of the Beatles who worked together between the years of 1962 and 1970. Within those eight years, the Beatles produced many albums, each evolving from the last due to changes and experimentation with recording technology. The albums Please, Please Me and Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band are the two albums that
When a person grows up, they are in constant search of their identity, of who they are. Yet, the identity of a person is too complex for anyone to form assumptions about it because it involves more than one factor. The assumptions themselves may be insulting to others who has experienced the truth of their marginalized group. According to the poem Nikki-Rose by Nikki Giovanni, “I really hope no white person ever has cause to write about me” (73). People can never enter the minds of others, they can only speculate from what they have seen or heard. Giovanni states that she does not want anyone to write about her, which shows that she believes they will not receive correct information. People may have honest
From the sounds of Elvis many other important bands of the sixties were inspired, even people a thousand miles away from America. One of these important bands was the Beatles. The Beatles took the rock sound and added more lyrical and musical complexity to the sound. The Beatles were the starters of the “British Invasion” in 1963 when they released “I want to Hold Your Hand” (Kallen, 2012, 31). After their first single they had immense success with other hits such as “She Loves You” and “Woooo!” The Beatles continued to reinvent their music on the various other albums throughout the sixties delving into complex, heavy existential concepts and psychedelic elements, becoming the most relevant influence for modern rock.
This is what began fostering the unique sound of The Beatles. So many different genres of music and a breadth of diverse artists inspired them, and consequently their sound became something entirely new. This is how The Beatles began to mold a new image of music, by taking all of the inspirations and melding it to become the epitome of their creativity. By using the Rock and Roll style of Elvis and combining it with other kinds of music they heard they started creating some of the most unique music at the time. They were also making unique music because essentially they were breaking all the rules because they didn’t know any of them. They didn’t have to follow the guidelines of the instruments that they were playing because they had no formal or professional training to teach them how to play. So instead of confining themselves in the wall of their own training they were able to broaden their horizons and break rules. However, this unique sound alone didn’t get them to the top, after Liverpool we shift our focus towards Hamburg, where the band perfected and fine-tuned their art, and acquired a strong stage presence.
1963 proved to be the beginning of the Beatles phenomenon with the release of their hit “Please Please Me”. This hit topped the British charts early in 1963 and remained there for 30 weeks (Unterberger, 2005). The Beatles continued evolving rock by adding a unique style of their own and continuously trying new ideas and adding a new flare to their music. Each of the albums showed a progression of the artists.
There have been many people, known as artists, who have tried to change the world through their art. “Art” can be paintings, music, dances, sculptures, literature, or photography. There are many ways to communicate and express ones feelings but The Beatles did it through their popular music. Although they didn’t focus on changing the world of politics or try to protest through their music they have songs that focus on those exact two things.
Instead of the cheerful, youthful, puppy love, dance style music associated with the Beatles, they released “I'm a Loser” off Beatles for Sale in 64, a folk inspired song about romantic rejection. Also “You've Got to Hide Your Love Away” off Help!, played on acoustic guitar and “Norwegian Wood” off Rubber Soul are heavily influenced by Bob Dylan. These songs are written more introspective, using acoustic guitar, and shows a darker and less naive thematic, that can hardly be danced to, all credited to Lennon in his “Dylan face” …..There are some evidence supporting that the Beatles had an influence on Bob as well, even though Dylan has been less candidly about openly admiring the group. It`s said that after the meeting in with the Beatles in 64, that it was them who inspired Dylan to
Two feature films, A Hard Day’s Night (1964) and Help! (1965), followed. However, by the end of 1965, the influence of Bob Dylan and the accelerating popularity among pop musicians of marijuana made the international pop scene to advance from the straightforward energy and good humor of "beat music" towards a greater formal and emotional complexity. Aware that they needed to regenerate themselves stylistically, the Beatles toyed uncertainly with "comedy songs" and idiosyncratic variations on soul music in their transitional album Rubber Soul (Parlophone, 1965). Only in early 1966, with the appearance of
When it comes to analyzing a song there is no right or wrong way of doing so. Music appeals to people differently and every person will interpret it based on their own feelings. I chose the song Imagine by John Lennon because it’s a song that speaks volume. John lennon is a very sensitive singer that when you listen to his songs it touches your emotions and make you live the situation discussed. In his song “Imagine”, John Lennon expresses and tries to encourage call people to peace regardless all the conflicts that people face such race, religion or ethnicity.
the Beatles. And they had to go to Germany to do it. In order to
Social criticism examines literature in the cultural, economic, and political context in which it is written or received. Keeping this definition in mind, it is necessary to understand the political, cultural and economic environment in which Lennon the above famous words.
John Lennon’s song “Imagine” was released in October 1971. Imagine was the most successful single that Lennon produced and is perhaps the best song in music history for its strong message. He wrote this song during the climax of the Vietnam War as an anti-war song. At this time in history peace movements were popular because of all the wars happening that involved the country and its people. His song is timeless as its message still applies today. It is true that everyone wants peace, but this picture Lennon illustrates is a fantasy. The song Imagine is a fantasy imagination of John Lennon that pushes the ideology of communism through its resemblance to an unrealistic society.
