The Fast and the Furious movie franchise was an unexpected hit when the first film was released. The movie is about Dominic Toretto, who is a street racing legend, teaching Brian O’Connor how to race and win them money and new cars. The only issue is Brian is an undercover cop who is investigating Dominic and his crew to solve the case about the occurrence of illegal hijackings of big rig trucks (“Plot Summary”). With such a simple plot line, no one expected this movie to take off and reach a huge level of success that lead to the creation of seven more movies with the prospect of there being ten in total over the next few years. The storyline is repeated throughout the movies with a huge, action packed hijacking scene, dramatic scenes of a couple’s quarrel, and a meeting with rivals. The film used a model of repeat and repurpose of their storyline to help develop it into a stronger movie each time they created the next film (“What the “Fast and Furious” Can Teach You”) The director and crew listened to the audience and crunched the numbers to figure out what works and what does not and thus create the huge franchise that is The Fast and the Furious. Few film franchises have enjoyed the lengthy and lucrative run of The Fast and the Furious franchise, a success due in part to its diverse and recurring characters and a loyal fan base.
The Fast and the Furious (2001) was the very first film in the seven-movie franchise that brought the series to instant fame after its release.
