Overview of Film The film 12 Years a Slave is directed by Steve McQueen, and is based on a true story of an African American man named Solomon Northup. Solomon Northup was a free man from New York in the late 1800s, and was tricked, kidnapped and sold into slavery. Solomon spent 12 years of his life as a slave in Louisiana. He was stripped of his identity, given the name Platt, forced to hide that he was literate, and inform anyone that he was a free man that was kidnapped. Fortunately, Solomon met a Canadian abolitionist named Samuel Bass that listened to his story, and agreed to send on letter on his behalf to his friends and family in NY explaining his situation. Mr. Parker a white man, and friend of Solomon went to Louisiana, threatened to take his case to court, and brought Solomon home to reconnect with his family. The movie ended by telling what happened after he was a free man. Solomon attempted to bring the people responsible for his enslavement in court, but he was not allowed to testy against whites. Therefore, all men involved in his kidnapping were not prosecuted. Solomon wrote a book in 1863 entitled Twelve Years a slave, and became an abolitionist that lectured on slavery, and helped slaves escape on the Underground Railroad.
