The First Amendment is one of the most important amendments that exists in the bill of rights. Some of our most important unalienable rights exist due to this amendment. They are, the freedom of speech, assembly, press, religion, and the right to petition.? But, what do all these freedoms grant? Well, here are the basic descriptions and origins for these freedoms.
First, we will discuss the freedom of speech. Freedom of speech is a principle that supports the freedom of an individual or community to articulate one's opinions and ideas without fear of retaliation, censorship, or sanction. However, it does not protect slander or threats to people, like yelling fire in a crowded theater. The earliest Concepts of freedom of speech can be found in early human rights documents. England's Bill of rights legally established the constitutional right of 'freedom of speech in Parliament' which is still in effect. The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen (a bill passed by France in August of 1789) further specified that Speech was an unalienable right of man. Now, it is a right recognized almost all over the world (only countries under dictatorships or under rule banning any basic freedom like North Korea, Turkmenistan, and Iran do not have this right). Next is Freedom of assembly. Freedom of assembly, is the individual right or ability of people to come together and collectively express, promote, pursue, and defend their ideas.
