In 1938 an idea that would shoot over the country faster than a speeding bullet came to being in Action Comics #1. He was stronger than a locomotive and had the ability to leap over tall buildings in a single bound. Onto the scene came a man in swirling red, blue, and yellow. This was the first iteration of Superman but it would not be the last. Seventy years of comics have been published and over time the Man of Steel naturally evolved to meet the demands of new writers and new audiences. However, Superman evolved peculiarly in one specific way. Over time and over the different Ages of comic books Superman developed caring towards each individual he saved. Different from when he first started out where he would save an individual but he acted
Gary Engle describes Superman as the ultimate American, “Superman is the greatest American hero” (Engle, 677). After reading three comic books I notice an occurring theme of wanting to protect what is good, even though the comic books chosen span over eleven years. Several distinct things to Superman’s personality are his cape, the respect he has for others, the respect others have for him, his intelligence, his protection of all life and what is right, his origin, and the sacrifices he makes. Superman is considered to be the greatest American hero of all time.
"Man and Superman", by G.B. Shaw was produced and completed by University of Houston students. It was done in Wortham Theatre, which happens to be one of the smaller theatre's I have attended. The size of the theatre, and the fact that I attended a matinee performance made for a very intimate setting. With not many people in attendance, it felt as if the actors were speaking directly to me and not those in the very back of the house. From where I was sitting, I could see every little movement made, whether it was a hand movement or the red face of a man who played his part so well. Together, each of these little elements of design, from costumes and lighting, to sound and scenery, to the actions used on stage, allowed for the actors to put on an amazing production. All the little things added up to make the play come off the page of a book and onto the stage, where there was never a dull moment.
But whence digging past the loud colours and the "it's-a-bird-it's-a-plane," generic, one realises the true face of Superman. He isn't super for his inhuman abilities or his capricious appearance, he isn't a true man for his strong build and his appealing features: Superman is super because he's what everyone should aspire to be, and he is a man because he melds the world in a form of good and good only. For if Superman wanted to, he could rule the world and no one would be able to stop him. Superman is, literally, a god among men. He has the power to sink entire continents and kill millions of people with ease, but he chooses to protect everyone, good or bad, no matter how insignificant and tiny the life is for nothing in return. Superman is a hero because he's there for everyone, never compromising his ideals and taking the high road to support those in need. This is despite the fact that he could basically be a god lording over others without much trouble, but instead chooses to serve and inspire. That is why he is a hero. Superman is the ultimate hero, and not just because he is the most powerful being on earth but for his integrity which sets him completely apart. One could constantly remark on how Superman looks for the best in everyone, how he is ultimately loyal and selfless, not even considering the fact that he could rule the world but chooses to serve is the greatest compliment you can
The fictional character of Superman has weaknesses as does Charles Perkins, which leads to constant struggles to stay in power. Ultimately, he has these flaws so we can relate to him. So it goes without question that Superman and Charles Perkins desire was to improve the world with their power, instead of using it for their personal gain. Both of their upbringings were for the benefit of the community. Evidence suggests that both of them have two guardians such as birth parents and people who raised them. Inevitably, Superman wants fame because he doesn’t hide his identity and obviously wants people to know who their saviour is. Ultimately, Charles Perkins wants the same. The similarity makes them timeless. He wants to be noticed, wants to make a difference and finally wants to be remembered. Unfortunately, Superman will be never accepted in the modern world because of his exceptional powers therefore will be an outcast. Obviously, he realises no human can achieve what he has. On the other hand Charles Perkins is not accepted because of his race and colour. He is of a mixed race and not accepted by his family members and unfortunately is not accepted by the whites. He is in no man’s land and doesn’t fit in. Therefore, regardless of what he has achieved, he will always be an
So after he finished helping the people that needed help before that, he rushed to Evil Man. He saw what Evil Man did so he started to worry he wouldn’t be able to fix everything. So he eventually started fighting Evil Man and it took a while for him to take him down but he got it. As soon as he did that he hurried to the people that was hurt and saved them. Soon after that he got the name Superman.
Superman is a DC Universe comic book character. He is a superhero. He saves many people’s lives but the people don’t appreciate the big mess that he creates while he is saving the people. Superman may be a made up character but he a inspiration to many people in all different ages. Superman has been rejected and ridiculed but he doesn’t give up on the people.
Since the creation of “The Invincible Superman”in 1938 he still remains to be one of the best and most well-known heroes.“Telling their sorrow, telling stories /Of their dead King and his greatness, his glory” (831-834).Beowulf has died, showing how he is mortal and able to die. Superman is not, he is invincible--indestructible from any and everything. Another huge difference between the two heroes is Beowulf is a human from earth. While Superman is inhuman and was exiled from the planet Krypton. After the battle with Grendel Beowulf must swim to the bottom of a murky lake to take the life of the one who took his men’s lives, Grendel’s Mother. Similarly, Superman must travel to other planets and other galaxies to help those in need of him. As a child, Superman is sent away from the planet of Krypton, to the town of Smallville,Kansas where he then realizes all his supernatural powers. Superman defends Metropolis against disaster but also flies into outer space to fight off Brainiac and save a city from his own planet. Many times, he makes the trip to other universes to help those in distress. This is a resemblance of how both men are able to use their remarkable abilities to better the lives of
of his daily duty of “protector of the Earth,” Superman reacts instantly to the problems he
Beowulf was a brave and strong hero. He feared nothing. Superman is much like Beowulf in this sense. Beowulf did not have super powers but he had no fear of death. He didn’t go out to fight demons for gold. He fought for glory. Superman was similar. He fought to protect. He did not want anything in return. The thing that makes these two men heroes is that they would lay down their life at any moment to save another. The both faced their “demons”. Superman fought crime day to day as Beowulf went around the world to fight demons and prevent them from harming villages. Although both of these heroes were great, they both had their weaknesses. Beowulf could not resist the beauty of Grendel’s mother. She was too beautiful for him to resist.
For centuries, man has struggled with the concepts of good and evil and have produced astounding works as a reflection of it. This is ideally the foundation of early fables and folklore dating back to ancient civilizations. Stories about famed heroes and the battle of good and evil woven into extravagant tales of danger, destiny, and triumph. These stories were often assimilated into individual societies, told from generation to generation until eventually finding themselves becoming an integral part of the culture. In 1938, a new era began to emerge known as the “golden age” of superheroes. Superman made his first appearance in action comics, forging a unique identity as the first comic book superhero in American culture and quickly
Who is Superman? Many might recognize Superman as a hero of great prevail, with super powers that bend the laws of the universe. Truly, Superman is recognizably one of the strongest and well-known heroes in the DC Comics universe. Children view him as a role model, perhaps as a personal hero - one with astounding power and absolutely triumphant morals; one that always does good. If our perception of a “superhero” is a person that does good in any situation, then our definition of an actual Superman in our society can vary - depending on the judgment of a person. In Waiting for “Superman” - Davis Guggenheim’s thought-provoking documentary - the definition of Superman is compared to the saving grace for the public school system. The film
People look at Superman like a God, strong and mighty. A warrior against evil. Superman's appearance is distinctive and iconic; he usually wears a blue costume with a red-and-yellow emblem on the chest, consisting of the letter S in a shield shape, and a red cape. Clark creates the costumed identity of Superman so as to protect his personal privacy and the safety of his loved ones. As Clark Kent, he wears glasses to disguise his face and wears his Superman costume underneath his clothes so that he can change at a moment's notice. To complete this disguise, Clark avoids violent confrontation, preferring to slip away and change into Superman when danger arises, and suffers occasional ridicule for his apparent cowardice. Whenever I picture Superman
The posters for each superman film reflect the evolution of superman and filmic technology. Poster three (man of steel) is most effective for advertising superhero films whereas poster two ( superman 1978) represents the idea of superman and this will be argued with close reference to the respective Superman filmic posters .
It’s hard to keep a good (super) man down. Ben Affleck certainly had some difficulty defeating the Man of Steel in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and the only thing that could actually kill Kal-El was Lex Luthor’s Doomsday, the monster he created using Zod’s corpse. But is Superman really dead? It certainly doesn’t look like he is, because Henry Cavill is currently working on his superhero physique in preparation for the Justice League movies!
Superman has powers like flying, x-rays, and heat vision. With his power Superman faces responsibilities and difficulties in calm and adequate ways. The opposite of Batman is that he is more aggressive and very impulsive in the moment to attack. They are very easily distinguished either in a comic book or a movie for their customs in different colors. Batman outfit is gray with black and a mask which anyone could determine the evil and dark he represents by the outside. Superman is in a brightest outfit representing America and the kind a hero they will choose definitely to fight crime. Frank Miller only wanted to bring Batman a little bit different with other perceptions including his principal rival Superman to make the story interesting and give the opportunity for many readers to notice wrong actions from our comic heroes.
