It's just a normal day. You wake up, get ready, and rush out the door. An everyday occurrence, yet without one simple object this daily routine would be drastically different. Consider what you would do on a cold snowy day, or a wet, rainy day without shoes. What would you do when working in the weedy, rocky yard without shoes? A lack of shoes instantly makes itself known when you step out on the icy cold ground or tread on a nice prickly bush. But so what, you say. After all, shoes only take us practically everywhere we go. There are only entire stores dedicated to them. Shoes may seem so insignificant, but they are a window into human progression, creativity, and tastes.

Shoes in the Middle Ages evolved to include drawstrings to tighten shoes for a better fit, similar to today's laces. Later, creative shoemakers began to sport unique qualities on their shoes, such as pointy toes, in order to gain employment from rich patrons. This began the era of the diversification of the shoe (Shoe).

In the 1600s, the sewn-on sole became the norm for leather shoes. Inventors followed this by shoes which fit only the right or left foot and thus could be much more form-fitting. In the era of mass-production and industrialization which characterized the 1900s, experimenting producers started to use other materials for shoes, like synthetic cloth and plastics, raising the general quality of inexpensive shoes. This allowed more people to be able to afford shoes and made shoe sizes more uniform. It also led to an explosion of shoe types in the middle part of the 20th century (Shoe). Today, shoes are designed especially for many new, different purposes, such as athletics, to be eco-friendly, and even to mimic popular culture characters. Some traditional styles continue to hold sway, as well. Shoes have gone through a long progression of developments to make them more appealing, comfortable, durable, and useful.

Shoes, to many people, mean only a trip to Walmart to pay for things that don't fit very well and don't last long enough.
