The first step in identifying English Language Learners (ELL) is the give them an assessment. In my district, the student are given WIDA / W-APT assessment. W-APT is known as the WIDA-ACCESS Placement Test. This is an English language proficiency test that students take to identify them as English Language Learners. This test helps educators with placement decisions for English Language Learners. The test is divided into different groupings based on the grade level of the student being accessed. It addresses each area of the four language domains: speaking, listening, reading and writing. The English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher usually administers the test to students. The W-APT was designed to be used as one of many tools to determine eligibility of language services, an indicator of a student’s language proficiency and to assist in determining what level of instructional services is needed for the child and therefore an aide in lesson planning and future tracking of progress. (CAL) Per the ESL teacher from my district, various methods are used to meet all learning styles: one-on-one instruction, students are then instructed to do online ESL assignments and students also help each other with assignments that were given by other teachers. This establishes positive relationships with their peers where they can be more comfortable and it requires all ELL to practice each of their language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing).
