According to the text book, Business Communication For Success by McLean (2010), there are five contexts of communication. They are intrapersonal communication, interpersonal communication, group communication, public communication, and mass communication. These contexts affect how messages are sent and received. Each context is different and plays different roles in how and where we communicate with one another. Certain contexts are more appropriate than others in different circumstances and have different pros and cons. Knowing these can help you decide on how best to communicate your message. Personally, intrapersonal communication appeals to me the most while mass communication appeals to me the least. Often times you are communicating with yourself without being fully aware of it. This internal dialog, called intrapersonal communication, is happening all the time. Even while engaged in other contexts of communication, more often than not, there will be some intrapersonal communication happening. Intrapersonal communication can be both helpful and distracting. In certain situations, like having to overcome a difficult obstacle or problem, talking through the process in your head can help you come up with new solutions. On the other hand, intrapersonal communications can be distracting or unhelpful, when you are trying to pay attention to something external.
