Liberal economists questioned the costs and the benefits of having them, but the armed forces, the merchants and missionaries wanted colonies for their own respective interests. Colonisation was right from the start, marked by ambiguity on the one hand, colonies were there to be exploited but on the other hand, this was construed as not only materially beneficial for the colonies, but a moral responsibility of Europe.
