The Four Emphasized Areas of Art in Education
The National Summary Statement summarizes what every young American should know and be able to do in the arts. It is focused on four areas of emphasis: dance, music, theatre and visual arts. The scope of the summary statement is grades K-12 and speaks to both content and achievement. (National Standards for Arts Education) In this essay I will first describe the four areas of emphasis in art education and then provide recommendations of how the four areas of emphasis could be taught based on current research studies and theoretical constructs related to art.

Theatre has a very social basis as an interaction between the actors or performers and the audience. Some types of theatre are drama, musical or comedy. There is a large variety of approaches to creating a play or drama. There can be social messages, political agendas or spiritual ideologies being presented, while other are solely artistic or for entertainment. Aristotle defined six elements to theatre: plot, character, idea, language, music and spectacle. (Hatcher, 2000).
Wikipedia defines visual arts as “art forms that create works that are primarily visual in nature”. For example, drawings, sculptures, paintings, printmaking, etc. Included in the visual arts is also “modern visual arts”, this would include photography, video, filmmaking and architecture. Another sub group of visual arts is applied arts which would include industrial design, graphic design, fashion design, interior design and decorative art. Many artistic disciplines involve aspects of the visual arts. Thanks to the Arts and Craft Movement a distinction was made between fine arts and handicraft. Here are some elements of the visual arts with their definitions; * Drawing: means of making an image, using any of a wide variety of tools and techniques-dry media usually (pencils, pen, ink, crayons, charcoals, pastels and markers). * Painting: practice of applying
“After a certain high level of technical skill achieved, science and arts tend to coalesce in esthetics, plasticity, and form. The greatest scientist are artist as well” (Albert Einstein). In this advanced modern tech-world mostly people are dependent on science and technology, but arts also play an important role in education. Art creates balanced thinking and better imagination which helps humans to be successful in their career. Yo-Yo Ma intensely informs about important role of arts in modern education society throughout his essay Necessary Edges: Arts, Empathy, and education. Ma illustrates that arts should be also part of education, because it improve students to filter their imagination through disciplined knowledge. Liberal arts should be equal to science and technology because it creates new idea, and in this modern world people should think critical than divergent in their lives. Empathy teaches students to understand and simplify the complicated life. Collaboration include discussion amongst people or group to make things effortless. Moreover liberal arts itself is beauty such as performing arts, it values the beauty of imagination in modern society by art and sculpture.
Art is a particular form of social consciousness and of human activities, an important way for people to perceive, discover and improve life: according to the laws of beauty. It is the creation of tangible or intangible products containing great values of thought-aesthetics, cultural character, and emotions. In this sense, there are numerous types of art. Painting is one of the oldest forms of art on earth. From prehistoric times, artists not only used it to communicate, but they also used painting to entertain the viewers. Painting can be transformed, eliminating the tedium, fatigue, and stress in daily tasks to bring the joy. Fun in life or silence for the soul. Some may argue that dance is an art and not a sport. Yet, it has the same characteristics as a sport does.

Dance is one of the most beautiful, expressive forms of art known to mankind. It expresses joy, love, sorrow, anger, and the list truly goes on for all the possible emotions that it can convey. Dance not only can express how one feels, but it can tell a story or even be used to praise a higher power. Dance has intricately played an important role to every culture over the course of time. Two forms of dance that have not only stood against the test of time but have influenced the development of other various styles of dance is none other than Classical Ballet and Modern Dance.
Theatre has been a prevalent form of entertainment for centuries. As time has progressed, the meaning behind theater has shifted to adapt with society appropriately. Different genres of theater have been emerging all throughout history and continue to emerge even today. There are so many different genres of theatre that any individual can relate to it. One can easily recall the major genres of theatre: drama, comedy, musicals. However, it is the sub-divisions within these major genres that evoke unique performances and experiences.
In the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, to dance means “to move your body in a way that goes with the rhythm and style of music that is being played”, (Simple Definition of dance). Many people can do the action of dancing but very few individuals are born with the talent that is required to fulfill a professional dance career. Individuals born with a natural talent and receive the training needed have a variety of occupations that they can acquire.
During Quarter 1, we learned that art is the visual expression of an idea or experience created using a skill. Using the language of art you can express emotions, describe events, communicate ideas and tell stories. Examples of art include drawing, painting, ceramics, and sculpting. Art is found

Computer art usually refers to any form of graphic art or digital imagery that was created with the aid of a computer. Computer art which curators today call digital art or new media art started to emerge in the 1950 and focused mainly on geometric shapes in random combinations. Many critics at the time questioned whether computer art could in fact be called art. Critics wondered whether computer art could still convey concepts of “meaning”, “expression”, and “form”.

Art education is often underestimated by many who believe that school was created to teach only analytical concepts such as mathematics and literature. However, research has shown that art courses are important, even necessary for students in elementary, middle, and high schools. These art classes may include not only visual arts but performing arts such as dance, theatre and choir. Barbara Streisand said, “Art does not exist only to entertain, but also to challenge one to think, to provoke, even to disturb, in a constant search for the truth,” (Quotations). Art is a form of human expression. Art can be seen as the artist sleight of hand on his mood. Art is in various media from posters to public wall of which we call “graffiti”. Art is elusive as the use of colors shapes and the surface used adds a new dimension. Art portrays various ideas, feelings such as triumph, love, happiness, sorrow and boredom in loss to mention a few. Art is beauty and creativity. During man’s evolution art has progressed over in its most primitive state up to its most modernized versions today.
Art Education is very important for students. A growing body of research suggests that the arts offer students a unique, valuable way to grow intellectually, socially and emotionally. These things are all associated with creativity. Schools today want to focus more on the four core classes math, science, english, and social studies which is acceptable for some students who are academically stronger in school. Opposed to the students who have a harder time focusing in school and we see them drawing when they need to be taking notes. Creativity today has become less and less more visible in classrooms in America. Due to the expansion of technology people see that it takes less time to look an idea up on the internet rather than taking the time to come up with something original.
