Depression is a common and serious illness that negatively affects how people feel, the way they think and act. It can affect not only people’s minds, but their entire bodies. Depression results in feelings of sadness, isolation, guilt, and sometimes physical pain. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems decreasing a person’s ability to function at work and at home (American Psychiatric Association). Over 15 million adults that live in the United States suffer from depression each year. Everyone probably knows of someone that is touched by this illness.
Depression has multiple stages, the first being how it begins. Depression is caused by three main factors. These factors are life events, personal factors, and changes in the brain. Life events or major changes can cause …show more content…

These three factors are how depression develops and begins. The next stage of depression is what happens during a person’s lifetime while they are living with depression. During a depressed individual’s lifetime, they suffer from impaired daily functioning. This results in them having difficulty working properly or well. People that suffer from depression also tend to stay away from family and friends because they have a sense of hopelessness and loneliness. During severe cases of depression, most times people cannot enjoy or find interest in anything. These are the common effects of depression throughout an individual’s lifetime. The final stage of depression is seeking and receiving treatment. Some people can cope with their depression by setting daily goals and plans, then sticking with these goals and plans as well as possible. Doing this will take their minds off of stress and make their day more enjoyable. Another way to deal with depression is to do things they enjoy to do. By increasing their time doing these things, it will gradually make them a more
