Modernity by definition is the changes brought about by the Industrial Revolution. The four traits associated with modernity is as follows: 1. The Decline of small, traditional communities In past years, small community life revolved around family and neighbors. It gave each person a defined place that offered a strong sense of identity and purpose. A factor that influenced modernity was the development of other forms of work, besides farming. Before the Industrial Revolution, most people lived in the country and made a living by farming. During the Industrial Revolution, factories and new technologies were created that allowed people to seek new careers in larger communities. Today, small, rural communities still exist however, society has made it almost impossible to live without cars, television, cell phones, and other technology. For instance, my grandparents lived on a farm outside of a small town in North Dakota. They didn’t own cell phones, cars, or computers to connect them with the rest of the world. Today, my family lives on the same farm as my grandparents did.
