The Future of Special Education In today’s classrooms we are seeing an increase in students with IEP’s and 504 plans. The rise in students with special needs and accommodations creates an interesting challenge for teachers today. Teachers strive on a daily basis to create a fair and appropriate education for all students in their classroom. However, with the need for increasing accommodations, how do we best meet these needs for all students? When we think of a typical classroom, we picture a classroom full of 20-25 students working together with their teacher in a cooperative environment. Often times, this in fact not the reality for those students with special needs. Many times the needs of students with disabilities and special accommodations are not being met by our schools. By incorporating more tailored and individualized one on one instruction for these students we as teachers can provide a better more quality education. However, the question still remains, should we be providing more mainstream (Inclusion) time in general education classrooms or more time in an intensive special education environment?

Problem Statement I believe that in today’s classroom we are struggling to meet the needs and accommodations required by all of our students. We are seeing an influx of students with challenging needs such as English Language Learners, bilingual students, students with Autism Spectrum disorder, and students with developmental disabilities.
