The Genocide Is Not A Thing Of The Past

Unbeknownst to many, genocide is not a thing of the past. Genocide and acts of atrocity are still being enacted today all around the world. Due to the many genocides of the past, psychologists, anthropologists, and others who study human interaction have discovered patterns in society that could potentially lead to genocide. There are usually warning signs and underlying risk factors that indicate a society is susceptible to a future genocide. There is also a definition that explicitly defines what acts are classified as genocide and acts of genocide. With this knowledge, it should be much less difficult to realize the potential or the occurrence of genocide and intervene. If intervention cannot happen, there are international justice systems such as the United Nations and the International Criminal Court (ICC) that can help prosecute and punish those responsible. Unfortunately, intervention does not happen as often as it should and the international courts do not always take place in a timely manner or serve the right amount of justice. This paper will explore possible means of effective intervention before and during genocide and effective strategies to promote justice in the aftermath of genocide.
Intervention before the acts of genocide are carried out is referred to as “Upstream” prevention by James Waller in his book Confronting Evil. Recognizing the warning signs and the risk factors of a society is an important factor in realizing the need for intervention. This
