Gentle Giants Have you ever thought of a shark being gentle? The whale shark is known as a “gentle giant” because they do not attack humans, it would be very uncommon. Scientists still have not discovered many others, as they may say. The whale shark has many very cool characteristics that help them live their life. Whale sharks feed from what is called a “Filter Feeder”. A filter feeder, according to page 2, strain the zooplankton. The article states, “As it cruises through the ocean, water flows continuously into its mouth. Filter pads in its throat strain out the zooplankton, and the filtered water is expelled through the shark’s gills…” (2).This shows how a filter feeder works and what it is used for. Scientists still have not yet
The Giants have been one of the best teams in baseball for a few years now and it sure didn’t look any different this year, until the second half of the season. The Giants have made it to the postseason three times since 2010 and won the World Series each time. The Giants are somewhat a hit and miss club that is use to inconsistency. Unlike their counterpart, the Dodgers have made it to postseason since the 2013 season including this year, unfortunately, they haven’t been able to get passed the NLCS in any of those years. The Giants are in that same position this year, on the brink of victory or failure. As of today, they are in the second Wild Card spot, but expect there to be quite a bit of shake ups until the postseason starts.
Pacific sleeper sharks, which are also known scavengers, can glide through the water with little body movement and little hydrodynamic noise making them successful predators. They feed by suction and cutting of their prey. They have large mouths that can inhale prey and their teeth cut up any pieces that are too large to swallow. They show a characteristic rolling motion of the head when feeding. Only in Alaska has the shark's diet been studied - most sharks' stomachs contain remains of giant Pacific octopus. They are also known to feed on bottom-dwelling teleost fishes as well as soles, flounders, Alaska pollock, rockfishes, shrimps, hermit crabs, and even marine snails. Larger Pacific sleeper sharks are also found to feed on fast swimming
The Great White Shark is the top predator of the ocean, meaning that it is not hunted by other animals in the waters. The Great White has been listed as an endangered species due to the over hunting of them for shark teeth and there fins.
Adapted for a wide range of aquatic habitats, various shark species inhabit shallow coastal habitats, deep-water ocean floor habitats, and the open ocean. With a wide selection to feed off of, as a whole the shark species feed on just about everything. Their diet consists of fish,
The baleen whales (Mysticeti) are characterized by baleen, a sieve-like structure in the upper jaw made of the tough, structural protein keratin. The baleen is used to filter plankton from the water. Baleen whales are also characterized by two blowholes.
It’s important to realize what sharks are capable of. For example, it states in “What do you know about Sharks?” by Sharon Guynup that “[the dusky shark] exerts 18 tons of pressure per square inch on a victim.” That only being one of hundreds of species one
Whilst Toothed whales feed on larger marine life like squid and seals, Baleen whales feed on krill, microscopic crustaceans, schools of small fish and plankton. Baleen whales engage in filter feeding, making it very easy to eat many small pieces of food at once. Filter feeding is simply when the whale opens up its mouth and it sucks in whatever happens to be there, while filtering out the undesirable water.
This organism causes the sharks to go blind. Luckily Greenland sharks are mainly scaevngers and heavily rely on their heighted sense of smell.

The basking shark, Cetorhinus maximus (Gunnerus 1765), is the second largest fish species in the world, with individuals measuring up to 11 m (Sims & Quayle 1998). Though basking sharks are one of the largest fish species on record, very little is known about their overall biology (Sims 1999, DFO 2008). Basking sharks are found circumglobally in temperate to tropical waters, with distinct stocks found throughout the world’s oceans (Southall et al. 2005, DFO 2008). They are considered the only obligate ram filter-feeding shark species, as other planktivorous sharks (the whale and megamouth shark) rely mostly on suction feeding rather than passive filter-feeding (Sims 1999).
One of my favorite band, Young the Giant, is coming to Atlanta, Georgia. I would really love to go see them and listen to them sing. I alway listen to their music, I have their CDs, shirts, cups, a blanket, and even a poster. They will be playing this Saturday at the Shaky Knees Festival. Three reasons why I think you should both let me go is because it will make me happy, I have been a excellent student and daughter, and I will help more with the children around the house.
Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s article “The Brutal Business of Shark Finning” reminds us that sharks play a key role in the ocean as both predators and scavengers.
While Squid uses a lot of energy throughout the day in order to move escape getting eaten, they are relatively light and don't use up as much energy when compared to Sharks. This is because Sharks are very heavy and dense fish, as well as apex predators. This requires lifestyle means that sharks use much more energy than squids do, therefor Sharks must absorb more oxygen from the water on a daily basis than squids do. In order to do that, Sharks gills are equipped with a countercurrent exchange system, in which the blood flow from the gills goes against the flow of the water passing through the gills. This system maximizes the amount of oxygen the sharks can absorb into their bloodstream, which in term maximizes the amount of energy the sharks can produce through cellular respiration. If the Sharks gills weren’t equipped with the countercurrent system, and the blood flowed in the same direction as water passing through the gills, the sharks would only be able to absorb about 50% of the oxygen in the water, due to the fact that the water and the blood would reach equilibrium. All in all, the countercurrent system allows for sharks to move fast and hunt other big strong animals despite their dense and heavy cartilaginous
Sharks have a very different breathing system than most animals that live in or on this earth. Sharks also receive oxygen from the water through gills, yet, unlike fish, sharks do
Roald Dahl wrote the big friendly giant as a contribution of his seven-year-old daughter who passed away. Dahl was a British World War 2 fighter and later became interested in writing books for adults. Soon after, he began to write children books and mad big hits off popular books and movies such as “James And the Giant Peach.” Roald Dahl had 5 kids and a wife named Patricia Neal. The Big Friendly Giant was dedicated to Oliva, his daughter, who died of a disease called measles encephalitis which is “swelling of the brain.” The book was published in 1982 which was 20 years after died.
