Many explorers came to South Carolina, but many failed to build a safe settlement for citizens to live on. The English were the big dogs in town, and were the first people to build a successful colony in South Carolina named Charles Town. The Spanish were the first people to explore South Carolina and they wanted to build their own settlement, but failed many times due to lack of knowledge of the land. So, the English took over and then they built the first settlement in South Carolina. Settling is the act of building a new way of life for yourself or others. Why was it so difficult to settle Charles Town? The difficulties of settling in Charles Town were geography, different resources, diseases, and Native Americans.
During 1670 to 1783, todays Charleston was first named Charles Town from King Charles II and later named Charlestown. Settlers from England, France and Spain all settled in Charles Town, and establish a colony. Many trial and errors took place in the process of coming to South Carolina. For example, Sir Robert Heath was given a grant but the initial settlement did not take place. Later, he built a settlement below Virginia Colony stretching Southward to Spanish Florida. While settling in South Carolina there were many struggles and obstacles encountered by the settlers. Charles Town was difficult to settle from geographical features, natural resources and wildlife, and diseases and Native Americans.
In 1629 King Charles decided to make England a colony. In 1729 north and South Carolina a colony. The colony's were taken over by the King and started to be a colony. The first settlement was Charles Town’s. England was one of the colonies.
In 1607 a group of English settlers built village in Jamestown, Virginia. King Jaime I of England founded a colony in the first seven months after its arrival. Within these colonies we find the New England colonies and South Carolina colonies. We will analyze and compare the government systems, religious and economic development of both colonies and how they were related.
Roger Williams after being exiled from massachusetts,n fled south and built a settlement with his wife and kids. Ann hutchinson also settled down nearby and made a settlement called portsmouth. In 1647 The colony was started because of strict religion and they wanted religious freedom, settlers came there because the other settlements had a strict religion forcing people that wanted to practice religious freedom should come here.
Jamestown and the Massachusetts Bay Colony had many similarities and differences. Many of these differences were due to their physical location and climatic conditions. The success of both colonies can be contributed to strong leadership and the characteristics of the personalities of the settlers that inhabited each settlement. Many of the early problems in both settlements can be contributed to a lack of knowledge on the parts of the settlers along with attacks from neighboring Native American tribes.
The first challenge Jamestown faced was their neighbors. The colony was located in present day Chesapeake Bay around several Native American tribes. According to John Smith’s map of Virginia, the major tribe they were surrounded by were the Powhatans. When the 104 males arrived in Jamestown, they were shot at with arrows from Natives. Later, during the “Starving Time” the english settlers were afraid to leave their fort in fear of being attacked by the Powhatans. However, Smith’s map showed other tribes surrounding the

In conclusion, there were many factors that contributed to the development of the colonial America, but geography was clearly a sizable influence. If the geography of America wasn’t the way it was, the colonists who settled here may have not survived as
Geography is the biggest part of a story. Every book, poem, short story, movie, play, and basically anything with a storyline has geography, it’s what makes a story good. Writers use geography to show readers a more indepth point of view of what they were thinking while writing. This is all stated in “Geography Matters” by Thomas C. Foster, he helps the readers realize how important geography is in their lives. In the Crucible by Arthur Miller, geography is a big impact on people's lives and actions. After reading these stories it makes the readers think how much the location and people they grew up with impacted them. Furthermore, geography is a big part in any story as shown through “Geography Matters,” The Crucible, and my own life.
To help with emerging oneself into the text, the author uses photographs and illustrations from living museums and authentic historical reenactments to show how colonial people lived in the 1600 and 1700s. The author does not just make mention of names of those who come over to settle into the New World but tells how and why the New World was settled. The author is very detailed in describing how things were for the settlers. The author even includes the hardships settlers and their families faced when they arrived in the New World such as the death of many settlers due to illness. There is so much information in the book and the author provides the reader with questions to begin each new topic in the book. This will help readers with critical thinking. The book has colored sidebars with even more interesting information and historical facts about colonial times and activities to try with the class.
