The Gibbs Reflective Cycle

What is…. And what could be? That is how a presentation can go depending on how you present your message. Using Steve Jobs and MLK (both known to history as being great speakers and motivators), Nancy Duarte showed that these men did not rely on some pre-written speech to dictate how their messages would come across. Establishing your point, acknowledging what is and what could be, and finally say why others should listen to what you have to say. It is also critical to make sure you are addressing the right audience. If you stick to a boring presentation, there is no clear vision for the future.

While a good presentation can deliver the insights of a topic and allows the audience to clearly understand a textual topic in a visual and more memorable way, a bad presentation can also make the audience more confused for even the things that they already know. Unlike how most people think, presentation is not all about the quality of the contents of the presentation but it greatly depends on aspects such as presenter’s confidence, quality of slides, and speaker’s methods and preparation for that particular topic. I ensured whilst I made my presentation that I spoke clearly and steadily. I have a tendency to talk quickly so I paid particular attention to controlling the speed of my voice. I also ensured I maintained eye contact with my audience and tried not to focus just on one individual.

The overall objective of this essay is to choose an event and reflect on the dignity of the patient and how dignity was maintained throughout the event. According to Kozier, Harvey and Morgan-Samuel (2011) dignity is treating an individual with respect, worth and value. The event I have chosen involves a patient who we found unconscious and had a ‘Do not attempt resuscitation’ (DNAR) order in place so therefore, died. To reflect on my chosen event, I will be using Gibbs Reflective Cycle (1998), I have chosen this cycle due to using this reflective cycle successfully in the past when working in a care home to thoroughly reflect on my experiences. This reflective piece of work covers an intervention relating to a 16 year old female who self referred requesting accommodation. A brief pen picture of the young woman’s circumstances will be provided along with interventions taken in respect of my involvement and of the involvement of other professionals from a variety of different agencies. All individuals involved within this piece of work will be anonymised to maintain confidentiality and pseudonyms will be used. To analyse the presentation and teamwork I need to be able to understand everyone has different experiences and different ways of working and had their own view on teamwork. My confidence grew as I got to know the team. Giving the presentation has helped me with my confidence, which I will need when I am working in the health care. For the purpose of this essay, I have selected Gibbs (1988) Reflective Learning Cycle to reflect on an aspect of individual professional practice, which requires development in preparation for my role as a Registered Nurse. Gibbs (1988) Model of Reflection provides a clear description of a situation, analysis of feelings, evaluation of the experience, conclusion, and action plan to make sense of the experience to examine what you would do if the situation happens again.

Using Gibbs Reflective Cycle (1988), I will reflect on the CPR experience during the Clinical Stimulation Lab (CSL). I will discuss the knowledge and skills I have gained, however indicate in my action plan what things I need to further develop.

We mainly did so by first discussing what we were each going to be discussing in our segment of the presentation and made sure that each of our segments directly related to the topic. After our discussion we began to formulate slides for each of our segments taking information and research from our papers and putting it into a bulleted form that would be easy to read on each slide. We also made sure to include images to keep our presentation interesting and captivating while also getting our point across. After we had finished our presentation and were satisfied with the information we checked it over for formatting mistakes as well as grammatical errors. Then on the morning before our presentation we ran through our presentation multiple times sorting out and issues that could make the presentation seem poor.      In a Learning team, presentation skills are very important. I would have to say that Presentation Skills would be one of my personal weaknesses in the Learning team. It is difficult for me at times to stand up in front of a room full of people and present a project or conduct some sort of meeting. For my lesson, I decided to teach Hip Hop history through a particular sub-culture known as “battle rap”. My student was Bradley Girigorie, a 21 year old male. I went on to explain to Brad that if it was not for battle rap, the culture of Hip-Hop would be a lot different than it is today. First, I started the lesson by saying Hip Hop was more DJ oriented during the early stages of the genre. That rap battles during the 70’s and 80’s were more about crowd presence rather than better lyrics.

If you have the opportunity, go to the room ahead of time and practice your presentation. Actually speak the words and choreograph your movement. If you can’t get to the room, rehearse in front of a mirror. Rehearsing your presentation out loud will help you be more effective. Anticipating questions will help you formulate your answers before you get in start a live audience.

There are a couple of things that I do feel I lack the confidence and skill to perform, and that is what I hope to gain from participating in presentations. I am scared to present because I don't know how to share my knowledge with others-students who may have no idea what I am talking about (Lecture 9, Group And Teamworking, 06/12/2011). I hope to learn more about how teachers share their knowledge as part of my own understandings.

Our presentation slides focuses more on pictures, charts and key-points for visual aid. By keeping the slides simple, audiences can focus more on the speaker. The videos uploaded by the Centre for English Language Communication department tell us our weaknesses which we do not realize by ourselves. Reflecting on my first and second presentation through videos and feedbacks from Ms. Christine has helped me
