Why share the memory of slavery? Jonas a 12 year old boy who is going to be the next giver who starts his training with receiving old memories.. In Jonas’s community a receiver is someone who gets old memories from generations back and his job is to keep all those good and bad memories. Jonas comes across the memory of slavery and he wonders to himself, should he share the stinging of a back after a whipping, the dripping of blood on the floor, and the loud noise of crying next to him. Based on what Jonas experiences and the boiling fire in his stomach, he does not intend to share the memory of slavery.
Body Paragraph #1: Jonas wouldn’t transmit the memory of slavery because it would be too painful for the people in his community to

For example, slave owners like Willie Lynch explained their treatment of enslaved people, “Take the meanest and most restless n****, strip him of his clothes in front of the remaining male n****, the female, and the n***** infant, tar and feather him, tie each leg to a different horse faced in opposite directions, set him afire and beat both horses to pull him apart in front of the remaining n****’s” (Lynch). Jonas wouldn’t share this memory because if people in his community found out what they did before to black African Americans then it will cause hate between everyone because they saw how africans who were slaves were treated unfairly, inhumanly, cruelly and oppressed for almost 400 years by their white ancestors like Willie Lynch. Additionally in the text Willie Lynch also explains the breaking process of the african woman, “If she shows any sign of resistance in submitting completely to your will, do not hesitate to use the bullwhip on her to extract that last bit [ b****] out of her” (Lynch). This evidence demonstrates why jonas wouldn’t transmit the memory of slavery because it might traumatize his community. By leaving the thought that their ancestors who were slave owners ideology of how to control a slave was to whip them brutally and oppress slaves
Despite the fact that he could be killed if he was caught. Jonas also wanted to release the memories into the community to make it a better place. Jonas looked to The Giver for advice, and The Giver was almost like a father to him. Jonas normally followed the rules of the community for what was right and what was wrong except when he ran away. Jonas learned that the rules of the community were harsh, once he had his knowledge he got from The Giver, he kind of made his own rules. The Giver shows lots of moral courage because he helped Jonas run away despite the potential consequences of getting released. Also the Giver took the risk of giving Jonas the memories when the previous receiver ran away because the memories were too much and then those memories were lost. The Giver has all the knowledge from the previous generations so he uses that to decide what is right and
Even if slaves did no such thing to anger their masters, masters would randomly torture them as a way to feel power and
On page 104 paragraph 3 the Receiver said to Jonas “ Apparently that’s how it was, once. Everyone had access to the memories ” That quote proves that at one point his community did not have sameness. Everyone felt emotions and saw colors. Another way Jonas gave to his community was on page 162 paragraph 3 the receiver stated “I’m grateful to you Jonas, because without you I would have never figured out a way to bring about the change. But your role now is to escape... ” That proves Jonas will give the gift of the memories to the community when he escapes .
This is shown in my first quote which is when Jonas says, “ The worst part of holding memories isn’t the pain. It’s the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared” ( Lowry, The Giver, pg 154). In response the Giver says there might be a way to share the memories. After seeing a baby be released, Jonas decides he want s to flee the city with Gabriel.
At the start of the story Jonas is feeling nervous about the ceremony of twelve's, where the children are given their assignment. This is where for the first time in the children's life, they will be doing something different then every other person in the community. Jonas is given the very special occupation, which isn’t really an occupation at all, of Receiver of Memory. He is the only one that can have memories of what life was like before sameness. The memories are given to him by The Giver, who was the current Receiver of Memory. The Giver must transmit all memories of history (the good,
Jonas informs The Giver that his father had performed the release of a twin earlier in the morning. He wished he could watch the release, which community rules restricted him from doing. The Giver reminded him that his training instructions allowed him to ask anyone for anything. He was also told that all private ceremonies of release were recorded. The Giver compelled Jonas to watch the ceremony of release and then instructed the Speaker to play the video.
Being the receiver of memory was a very important job in the community, however the citizens have no idea what the receiver actually does. While citizens have a very simple life with nothing to worry about, the receiver and giver of memory take on a very emotional life filled with pain. They have so much knowledge from memories that they can’t share with anyone, and this can be painful in itself. The Giver tell Jonas, “The worst part of holding the memories is not the pain. It's the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared” (Lowry 33). This pain comes from living a meaningful life, so it can be considered beautiful compared to others in the dystopia who feel nothing, nevertheless it still hurts as shown by the
Throughout the movie, it’s obvious that memories are a soul theme. First off, the memories of the people are removed and erased. Memories of war, love, music, excitement, sadness, and the happiness are all removed. There are only two memory fulfilled people, the Giver, who gives the memories to the chosen one, and, the only other person with memories who is also the main character, Jonas. Memories are a sacred and important aspect of life. The loss of memories is a very extreme adversity. The deletion of memories is also used as a controlling agent. The government can use this memory loss to control its people and put false information into their minds. The Giver’s society removed memories to eliminate pain from every person’s life. Today, memories are not erased by the government, but by a disease, Alzheimer's or another form of dementia. These diseases change a person. People with memory loss have no grasp of pain, physical or emotional. It is as if the person has never felt pain. As known already the Giver removes memories, which also puts a censorship over everyone. Without the ability of remembering how they felt towards an certain subject, they can't put forth their opinion or thoughts. Along with that words are largely censored, a example of words that are censored are words that have emotion to them. The word love is forbidden to say since it has emotion to it. Also inappropriate words are restricted to be said, to keep unintentional lies to be said. Besides words being censored, knowledge and info are controlled too. In reality we have multiple ways of receiving info or knowledge without it being handled by the government. In the giver the only way you receive any info at all is coming straight from the government. Who are also
This all implies that they are scared of what would happen if the memories were actually released to everybody. In this scene, Jonas learns about snow. The giver has transferred a memory of snow, which makes Jonas ask "Climate Control. " Snow made growing food difficult, limiting the agricultural period. Unpredictable weather makes transportation almost impossible at times.
By doing this, the masters and overseers torn down the slaves’ spirits and infuse one so-called indubitable belief into what the slaves “held” to be true — they were born to be slaves and nothing could change their status. During the nineteenth century, young women workers went on strike because of over exploitation on them. Indentured servants rose up because of mistreats. However, the slaves were always kept in their traps because they were suppressed from birth to death, were unable to tell what they could have except their current situation, and were forced to spend most of their time and energy on stealing some coarse bread to survive.By implementing all those inhumane conducts described by Douglass in his narrative, slaves were suppressed to a state that their emotions became plain, their desires became trivial and their nerves became numb, which is exactly the situation that the plantation owners wanted.
“If you were to be lost in the river, Jonas, your memories would not be lost with you. Memories are forever.” (144) This is a quote that the Giver said to Jonas and it means that whatever happens a person has they will never lose your memories no matter how sad they are they will always stick. Because people know that the memories they hold are very precious to you. Memories are very important because they make a person who they are. And losing those memories and without them people wouldn’t know who they are. And people can also look back when a person is older to all of those happy moments that they have had and they also teach them lessons like mistakes they have had in the past. With everyone knowing that they have memories they will most likely live a happy life but they aren’t all happy ones there may be sad, infuriating moments and those memories may make them a bad person sometimes like getting revenge on someone else. And Jonas community doesn’t have those happy memories about the happy life of the
If the citizens in the community were to hold their own memories, it would make The Giver and Jonas receive less stress. They would not have to worry about keeping the pain, joy, melancholy, memories that they get to experience each day a secret. The Giver and Jonas would be able to share what they learn and they would be able to teach others as well. “ The worst part of holding the memories is not the pain. It’s the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared.” (p.193). The Giver and Jonas would not be the only ones who get to see color and feel love and emotions. They would be able to talk to people about what they discovered or what had happened in their memories. The Giver and Jonas would not be alone.
The slave owners degraded and made slaves feel inferior to and dependent on the white race. Various tactics achieved this. Through threats of death and constant cursing upon disapproval, slaves had to endure the harsh slandering towards their characters. Upon discovering Jones intentions to improve himself by learning to read, James told him slaves are to not improve and called him a “poor, miserable nigger” (pg. 5). Eventually, slave owners pushed their slaves to such limits that it resulted in slaves wishing for death (pg. 3).
Jonas goes through a lot while receiving the memories from The Giver. He first gets happy memories such as the sled, but then The Giver has to give him painful memories. He first receives the memory of physical pain from sunburn (Lowry 86). The pain is minimal compared to the memory of a broken leg (Lowry 109) and an injured arm during a war. During the war memory, he sees death (Lowry 119, 121). He experiences grief when he receives the memory the shot elephant (Lowry 100). Most haunting of all are the memories of the release of old and the part his father plays in the release of new born (Lowry 150). These trials at first horrify Jonas but he learns to deal with the
In Jonas society, nobody knows any information about anything. The elders, who are in the Giver’s community, believe that no community members except for them and the Receiver of memory should know all the information. Even in the beginning of the training, Jonas thought that he had to protect people from wrong choices. But, the Giver agreed that it was safer. Jonas was getting mad about how the memories couldn't be shared with everyone, so he decided to run away on his bike with Gabe. They decided to make a plan to leave. The Receiver and Gabe left the community together. Life is full of color, even though life was remained in this society, it was not colorful. All the bad days and good days were very valuable to
