As a class we have recently read The Giver. The author of this book is Lois Lowry and throughout the story there was a bunch of parts in the book where I couldn’t understand what was happening. The main plot of the story is to maintain sameness in the world. A young boy who just turned 12 named Jonas has received his job. The job he has to do for the rest of his life is to receive memory from the past, make sure the bad things that happened do not come back and he is there to prevent it. During his training he is brought back in time to the past and he has to experience all bad things from their history. He realizes that there is so much to live that is being stolen from everyone in the community and he wants to stop it. Jonas escapes …show more content…
He glanced nervously at the speaker on the wall, reassuring himself that no one was listening. ‘I wish we had that,’ he whispered. ‘Of course,’ he added quickly, ‘I do understand that is wouldn't work very well. And that it’s much better to be organized the way we are now. I can see that it was a dangerous way to live.”
Jonas is saying he wishes the feeling of love could be felt. Once he felt that feeling for someone he understood why it can’t be felt in his society. Since losing a loved one could cause pain it is made sure everyone in the society can’t possibly feel it. But, he thinks it is very important to have that feeling because it is the greatest passion someone could have. Even though it would prevent a lot of problems he believes love should be felt because he has a feeling of emptiness and can’t share his passion with anyone

Once he discovers that he can feel love he wants to get out of the society. Jonas stops taking his stirrings and eventually it wears off and he can feel emotions. Between Jonas and the Chief Elder there is a conflict between the two. Once Jonas finally decides to escape there is nothing they can do about it. He made the decision to rebel against the rules and do something his own way. This caused Jonas to finally see what he has been missing out on his entire life.
At the end of the novel Jonas has escaped to the boundaries of their world. There is snow everywhere and he has just about given up on his journey. He sees a sled off into the distance. From his previous training he remembered what it did and how to use it. He used the sled to transport Jonas and Gabriel down the hill without him having to walk because he is out of energy. He reached the bottom of the hill and found the house. The house was safety for him and Gabriel which is important because it showed the reader that Jonas made it to safety and he completed his
I think the author teaches anyone a good lesson on determination. I think the theme is determination is the key to success. The first reason is that a decent chunk of the book is about Jonas trying to save his community. One piece of supporting evidence is when he was determined to leave the community and return all the memories. In order to get memories back, he was determined to go and wasn’t giving up.
Jonas has to deal with running away in
Jonas learns about love, he wants everyone else to feel it as well. Jonas feels love for his family, but they don't feel love for him. For this reason, Jonas left his Community to make sure that they feel what love is. If you don’t have feeling or emotions, it gives you a different perspective of society. Feelings of 'love' allows for comfort and a connection with one another.
Jonas is not able to share the memories with any friends or unit family members and he has to deal with the fact that his friends and his family unit always ask him and he has t lie to them tellings them that they just walk all the time and he learns new
He is given his Assignment in chapter 8. Once again, Jonas is fearful of what is to come, but he sees the audience accept his Assignment and he feels a change within himself. The author writes on page 80 in chapter 8: “I think it’s true” he told the Chief Elder and the community. “I don’t understand it yet.
Throughout the book jonas becomes more and more angry and against the rules of the community. “I want to wake up in the morning and decide things!” jonas was furious because the other people of the community were not given any power. The people couldn't even see color and were blinded by
Jonas has received memories, he received memories of war, of pain, and emotions that have made him feel differently. All of the information, and knowledge Jonas experienced and went through changed his opinions. “With his new heightened feelings, he was overwhelmed by sadness at the way others had laughed and shouted playing war. But he knew that they could not understand why, without the memories”(167). Throughout the book Jonas starts to develop new emotions that change his opinion on what happiness really is. “By now Jonas had experienced countless bits
Jonas has changed from being feelingless and as the story goes on he develops feelings.
From beginning to the end of the novel, Jonas proves he is a serious person. Lowry writes, “He didn't often do volunteer ours with his friend because Asher frequently fooled around and made serious work a little difficult.” (Lowry, 26) Here Jonas does not want to participate in work that requires to be mature with Asher. This is important because it shows that Jonas is very focused and can't
Jonas makes a journey and breaks the barrier letting all those components back into the society. Jonas goes through a long, dangerous journey to make a better tomorrow for his society. By choosing to save his community, Jonas jeopardized his life because if the Elders caught him he would have been released, which means prosecuted. In his community there is no love and passion. After the Giver gives Jonas the memory of love he is confused about why his community does not have it.
Although Jonas’s world didn’t give any freedom of choice to people, Jonas experiences having it indirectly through memories. He learns about choosing different colors, having emotions, and choosing to do something. In fact, when Jonas realizes that he can’t live without having freedom of choice, he decides to leave his home, also known as his Community, like Tris left Abnegation. On the way of heading to Elsewhere, Jonas gets hurt and exhausted. This is a totally different life compared to his Community life where he was safe, and everything was peaceful.

His Mother, Mary Fiegel does not have a job, but instead stays at home and cares for her Mother, who is sick and living with them.
Jonas wants to leave the community so that all the memories would go to everybody, but then he heard that gabe was going to be released so he decided to take gabe with him. The sighnificant passage that relates to the theme is “He tried to relax ,to breath evenly. The room was absolotely silent, and for a moment Jonas feared the he might disgrace hiself now,on the first day of training,by faling asleep. Then he shivered.
Jonas wanted to live a different life. In his journey, Jonas travels with Gabriel, the child that was being nurtured by his family. He needed to saved him from being “released”. Together they faced danger and fear but it was just the beginning of a new life in the land of Elsewhere.
Jonas accepting his society because he's unaware of emotions of the other people in his community. Jonas follows the rule of having the share your feelings everyday. Not telling
