The quote represents how the giver has to hold in all these memories and he isn’t able to share any of the joys or sadnesses of them. The quote pertains to the story because its shows how hard it is for the giver to hold in all of the memories of the world and he cant tell anybody because it can cause trauma to the city. In the end of “The Giver” Jonas and Gabriel made it to elsewhere because in the story it says “he could see lights”; this quote explains how at the end of the hill, he knew something was out there because he could see lights. Another quote that supports the theory that they made it to elsewhere is “for the first time, he heard something that he knew to be music”. The third reason to support that they made it to elsewhere …show more content…
In the book it says that Jonas saw “red, blue, and yellow lights that twinkled from trees”.Jonas saying this represents what he is seeing as him and Gabriel go down the hill side. The house in the distance represents a place where a family is celebrating the holiday together.
Secondly, to support my examples, in the story it explains what he is hearing. In the story it says that when he was almost to the bottom of the hill, he was certain that he felt what was joy. He knew that whoever was out there, they were waiting for him and the baby to arrive. Jonas was certain that he knew everything he had recalled from the memories was true. He knew that they had finally reached the place he had been hearing about from the Giver. Jonas begins to hear music, followed by people singing.
Lastly, In the distance, he saw what he thought to be warmth and happiness from what the memories had described. Jonas saw family and friends who had gathered together to celebrate a special day all together. One quote from the story is “places where families created and kept memories, where they celebrated love.”. This quote describes joy because it shows that the people celebrated love which can also be described as happiness. It says that the families created and kept their own memories which is what Jonas describes as
Jonas felt the feeling of memories. “raised his trunk, and roared to the empty landscape”(111)Only the receiver can have feeling and memories, and when Jonas gets the memories, the memories can be one of the greatest feeling of the past and the animals that once lived. “Snowflakes. They fall from the sky, and they're very beautiful”(164) When the community put climate control, not many knew of snow and what it was like.”He fell with his leg twisted under me, and could hear the crack of bone”(103) Many memories that the giver gave him were horrifying, but all jobs are
“He forced his eyes open as they went downward, downward , sliding, and all at once he could see, lights, and he recognized them now. He knew they were shining through the window of rooms that they were the red, blue, and yellow lights that twinkled from trees. ”The meaning of this quote is that Jonas is hallucinating and he is about to die, but has remembered the first memory he received, and so he is thinking it is real and that there is people, a house, lights, and music. Actually, Jonas is dying from hypothermia. It pertains to the story because last memory he remembered is the first one the giver gave him, and also shows that even though Jonas has died all the memories he received are now gone and the people have the memories know.
This is shown in my first quote which is when Jonas says, “ The worst part of holding memories isn’t the pain. It’s the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared” ( Lowry, The Giver, pg 154). In response the Giver says there might be a way to share the memories. After seeing a baby be released, Jonas decides he want s to flee the city with Gabriel.
“Goodbye Jonas.” The Giver said back. Jonas could tell by the sound of the Givers voice that he too was sad to say farewell. And with that the giver turned away and walked into nothingness and he seemed to disappear. As Jonas watched his mentor and friend walk away he remembered what he had said. All you have to do is wake up Jonas and you will go back to your life. So Jonas closed his eyes but this time when he awoke he was in a different room.
“Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo. The quote talks about how Jonas crosses the barrier. He thinks he can hear the memories going back to the people in his community and that he can hear music playing. In the end of “The Giver,” Jonas and Gabriel cross the barrier and return the memories because they had the strength, The Giver knew what he was doing the whole time and, Jonas thought he could hear the memories going back to the community.
In the narrative it says,” ‘ I liked the feeling of love he confessed.’ “ (Lowry, ) Throughout the hardcover Jonas confessed to many thing one of whivh being love. This proves he is honest because he is willing not to push his feelings aside, and be truthfull. Lowry also write, “ ‘ I did dream last night.’ Jonas told the.” (Lowry, ) In the novel he is confessing to having a dream. This exibits the character trait, genuine because it would have been extremly easy to lie, and keep his dream to himself. Jonas reveals the character trait of honesty.
Jonas learns things he has never known. For example, on page 115 in The Giver, “By now Jonas had experienced countless bits of happiness, things he hadn’t known before.” Not a lot of people in the community show or experience practical happiness. Therefore, he knows more memories of happiness and emotions than the community
When Jonas leaves the community, the farther he gets, the more distant and less precise his memories become. There is an idea that Jonas hallucinated before he died, giving him a false perception of reaching the village. Though Jonas did not hallucinate, in fact he did reach the village he described. In the book, the author states he saw a red sled at the top of a hill, one of his favorite memories. Since it was one of his most fond memories, he could hold on to that memory more than others. When he and Gabriel saw it, Jonas recognized it. And since he would only have fragments of his memory, there would
Favorable memories and experiences will bring out the happier side in people. On page 52 of the giver Jonas is having his first memory, “the sled, with Jonas himself on it began to move through the snowfall,(lowry). This memory had by Jonas is one of the more exceptional ones he will have. He is having a pleasant time in this memory, so much that it builds on his happy side and gives him a love for
Memories are timeless treasure of the heart. This quote I found is significant to the story because the people in the book “ The Giver” don't want the memories because they are to painful, but in our world our memories are charitable. In the story “ The Giver” Jonas and Gabriel are walking and trying to get to the other side because their bike has rusted. The book says “ But my memories faded, leaving him colder than before.” I think that the harsh winds and the snow were so cold that they made the two bodys of Jonas and Gabe freeze to death. Then at the end Jonas and Gabe had a hallucination of them getting to the other side, but they were still on the ground almost dead.
Having memories is an important part of life. Memories help everyone learn from immoral things that have happened in the past and relate to them. Memories also help us relate to the feelings fellow humans experience throughout their daily lives. When Jonas becomes the Receiver, he starts to realize what feelings actually are. The Giver had been transmitting the feelings to Jonas throughout his training, and he specifically transmits one that has to do with the feeling love. When Jonas finally realizes what love is from his memory about Christmas and family, he goes home to ask his parents if they love him. His mom says they do not use such “meaningless” words, they use real words and “take pride” in his presence. When Jonas goes to training one day in the office, the Giver is hunched over remembering a painful memory from the past, and Jonas decides to stay and take the
“Being different is a talent. You illuminate what makes you special in the sea of sameness around you” -unknown. The message this quote is trying to bring into perspective is that being unique isn’t bad and it causes you become more and more special and beautiful. This saying pertains to The Giver because Jonas was different in a sea of sameness. In the end of “The Giver,” Jonas and Gabriel circle back to their community because he didn’t know where he was going, plus you see the memories Jonas released into the community in this destination, also it’s unlikely that the things he’s seeing are memories.
And how we shape our future" (71). Jonas and The Giver know that Elsewhere is a very important place. This is important because Jonas and the giver have a dream of making a plan for Jonas to go to Elsewhere to release the memories to the community, which they eventually do. The Giver also dreams of having his daughter back. “You can understand then, that that’s what I felt for
Jonas’s determination began to fade as the weather grew icier by the minute. At this point, Jonas was stumbling hopelessly and helplessly with a shivering Gabriel clinging to his chest. The hope for a new beginning had perished and he was trudging on like a horse plowing a field. Mindlessly, almost robotically. As Jonas continued, he began to hear a woman’s voice calling his name. The woman’s voice soft like summer rain, two things Jonas had experienced only in the memories the Giver had transferred to him. His head which once hung down was now held higher than it had been in ages. Jonas clung to Gabe with the ounce of strength that still remained within him. He began to trip and stumble over rocks, sticks, and other obstructions. “Jonas…”
“’Memories are forever”’ (Lowry). People make new memories every day without even realizing it. Some good some bad, that’s just the way of life, but in The Giver nobody knows what happened before them. People barley remember what their childhood was like, they don’t understand the importance of memory and that memories are forever. Aspects of life, rules, and prosperities between our world and Jonas’ world are very different yet have some similarities. Things that are crucial to the characters in The Giver are not as meaningful to the people in our world.
