At the ceremony of twelve Jonas is chosen to be the Receiver of Memory the Giver, transfers the memory to Jonas through his back. Jonas is annoyed that the people in the community can not appreciate their life which the Giver feels the same way which starts a bond between them. Later when Jonas is trying to plot out his escape is told that Gabriel is going to be released in the morning. In The Giver, Jonas’ world is turned upside down when he is chosen to be the next receiver of his community. The ceremony of twelves is the last ceremony of the day. Jonas waited anxiously for his name to be called; he never hears it. The chief elder has made a mistake. To introduce the topic, a brief summary on The Giver is necessary. First of all, The Giver takes place in a future utopian society, in which nobody can see color, pain isn’t felt, all community members have the same clothes, emotions are reduced to nothing, and the weather is always the same. At age 13 in the book and age 18 in the movie, all kids are given a specific job that they will do for the rest of their controlled life, the main character, Jonas, gets chosen for an abnormal job as the receiver of memories. Giver transmits all memories to Jonas, he starts with happy memories and then when the sad or dangerous memories start being transmitted to Jonas, he decides that he needs to do something about the world he
This all changes when at the ceremony of twelve, Jonas is given the role of Receiver of Memories. As the receiver, Jonas learns of the past and its beauty and horrors through the memories of long ago. Eventually, Jonas and the Giver (the previous receiver) make a plan for Jonas to return the

In Jonas’s world their community is a dystopian society. Their community is a dystopia because the citizens have no choices, the society is in “Sameness”, and the people who run the community make all the decisions.
Sometimes in life, you need to have some boundaries to separate you from the dangers of the rest of the world. In the book, The Giver, by Lois Lowry, Jonas’ society has very strict rules. These rules restrict them from being able to make bad choices. There is also a lack of memories, which means the people in Jonas’ community have a limited memory for specific reasons; to prevent pain, to eliminate suffering, and to avert people from making bad decisions and choices. Jonas’ community is a utopian society because there are very strict rules that everyone must follow, there is sameness, and lastly because of the lack of memories.
In The Giver by Lois Lowry, Jonas sees his community as the perfect place, but is it really? This essay the author will explain how Jonas live is a dystopic society. One reason this community is not perfect, is because they don’t have feelings or don’t understand them that well. In the story Jonas received a memory of love, he realized what love is, and he also realized that he loved Fiona, Asher, Mom, Dad, Lily, and The Giver. The problem was that when Jonas went home afterward he asked his parents if they loved him, they replied with “we enjoy you” or “ we are proud of your accomplishment” they said that love was a meaningless word.
However, Jonas is different. Unlike those in the community, he has light eyes, and the rare ability to see objects change; he can see flashes of color, before the object returns back into a monotonous shade of black and white. One day, his father, a nurturer, brings home a “sick” baby boy, Gabriel, and begins to take care of him. However, this baby has a strange characteristic; like Jonas, he has light eyes. If this baby does not get better, he will be released. At the Ceremony of Twelve, due to his traits and his ability to see beyond, Jonas is chosen to become the Receiver of Memory, the holder of the Community’s
Lois Lowry’s, The Giver is a unique perspective that is highly regulated to fit the idea of a “utopian” society. This society allows the government (also known as the Committee of Elders) to take ultimate control, deciding which humans should be “elsewhere” and which children are appointed to each “Assignment” .In this world humans become older, moving through stages and achieving new responsibilities at each stage. At the Ceremony of Twelve, adolescents are appointed their “Assignments”. When Jonas becomes old enough to be assigned his position in the society, he is told that he will be given unique training to become the next “Receiver”.
Living in our world is superior to living in a utopian society. Living in a utopian society can turn the world upside down. People could lose their freedoms and choices, everything could be the same and dull, and the world could even fall into ruin. In a utopian society he or she could lose their freedoms and choices.
Tomorrow, next week, next month, next year, next century; the time living on this earth seems endless. Just a few years ago, the first tablet was born; and now robots are created to be a vessel for human emotions and feelings. However, one writer’s prediction of the future doesn’t seem to be expanding, yet to simplify and regenerate. The Newberry award winning author, Lois Lowry has written the 1993 published novel The Giver ; a story of a boy named Jonas who is living in an utopian world who plays a larger role in keeping the past alive.
In The Giver, the society gets assigned jobs when only 12 years old. When Jonas's father talks about the twelve to Jonas, he states, “And finally, at the end of the second day, which seemed to go on forever, it was my turn. It was the ceremony of
Lois Lowry’s The Giver is set in a futuristic, dichotomous society, one that is both utopian and dystopian. In response to the overwhelming destruction and chaos in the world, the Elders have attempted to create and maintain a peaceful and orderly utopia, but this security comes at a price. The citizens of the community have sacrificed their individuality and freedom. Although most adult members have some knowledge of the hypocrisies involved, they choose to perpetuate the deception, allowing the community, as a whole, to continue on blissful ignorance. When young Jonas is confronted with all the truths of the present and all the memories of the past, he must choose for himself
The Giver is a prime example of a Utopia that becomes a nightmare society. After examining social contracts, monarchies, democracies and examining the constitution of the United States I have come to a conclusion on how an ideal society should feel. I think that nobody should be judged on how they look such as the color of their skin (racial profiling) or if they are fat or skinny. I also think that everyone should have an equal voice in electing their leaders say in a matter and everybody should have the right to choose their job. In addition, people shouldn’t lose jobs to people living in another country because then they won’t be able to provide for their family. Also there should only be one leader with the most power. This way other
