Sword clashed against shield. I struck again and kicked the shield. Only one could win, the other one had to die. Sweat covered my body. I lifted my arm, and slashed the shield once more. My body felt sore. The only thing motivating me was staying alive. My relentless opponent kept defending against my attacks. I kept slashing, and my opponent kept protecting himself with his shield. This had been going on for two hours already, and it was taking all of my exertion. I slashed again, and my opponent pulled back. My body gave up and the strength of my thrust sent my gladius along with my body to the ground. My opponent took advantage of this and pointed his spear at me. I wasn’t even given a proper meal or money for my fighting. I was a slave. I had to serve other people because of a mistake of my father. My father had become a Roman prisoner because he said what he thought about the gladiator fights. He was a gladiator himself, but he only fought to get money so he could feed my mother, my brother about to be born,my sister, and I. One day, he gave a public speech to the people of Rome, it was so convincing he almost got people to rebel against the gladiator fights. He almost got people to fight back. He only caused a commotion. He got arrested and became a criminal. Since a criminal can become a gladiator and he already was a gladiator they made him fight in a Coliseum. Unfortunately, he was eradicated during the fight. I fought today because of the same reason as my dad, to get money, because my family needed food. I could fight because I was a slave, and I could survive the fights because my dad had taught me how to use weapons in combat. I had a dexterity in using weapons. I was a slave because my dad became a criminal, and to punish him my family was made slaves. As a slave I had to obey a house or land owner. My family had to obey to a very cruel one. He gave us only what was left of his dinner to eat, and he made us watch him eat on purpose. I was feeling remorse about losing the gladiator fight when he called my …show more content…
They seemed to think that escape was impossible. So I decided to tell them about my other choice. Cassius didn’t seem very convinced, and Felix thought it was risky. Which it was. “I think it is extremely risky. You could lose this fight, and you already lost the last fight. Your just lucky to be alive. Even if you could win your freedom how would you win the freedom of your family.” Felix said. “I can get rich by starting a business after I win the Gladiator fight. After, I get rich I can buy my family as slaves, but treat them like I usually treat them. And I can survive a gladiator fight. My dad started teaching me how to use a gladius when was six years old. He taught me until I was 15 years old.” I replied defensively. “You had only 9 years of practice and it was technically just 8 years because your father died when you were 15 years old. The emperor would be glad to kill you when you enter the Coliseum because of your father’s speech. I'm sorry, but it’s a ludicrous idea.” Cassius

Most of the time gladiators fought in arenas but sometimes the ruler forced others to fight. Gladiators had the opportunity to regain their freedom but it was nearly impossible. For a gladiator to gain back their freedom, they had to survive 5 years of fighting (5 to 10 fights in total) when only a few made it out of one fight alive. If a gladiator won, along with their freedom, they would get laurels, money, donations from the crowd and a rudis which was a wooden sword which allowed you to become a gladiator trainer. Being in a gladiator fight was like being a mine detector in an army, if you make a mistake, you or your friend dies. It took a tremendous amount of skill and patience to strike just at the right time. Gladiators were a very crucial part to the roman economy and the safety of the Emperor. The most famous gladiator was Spartacus because of his revolt with other slaves against the Romans. There are many different types of gladiators, for example, a thracian and a Secutor. The Roman Empire also became very intimidating so other countries would not even attempt to fight. The Colosseum was the most popular arena for gladiators, but there were many other arenas. The gladiators were important during the Roman Empire because they celebrated the dead
Spartacus was captured and placed into slavery; where he was sold to a Gladiator training camp in Capua, Rome. He perfected the art of hand to hand combat to kill any opposing gladiator in the Arena all the while Spartacus devised a plan to escape with other gladiators. Spartacus escaped from slavery and defeated multiple waves of Roman Legions by conquering small towns and villages while gaining material and support, using his unconventional tactics thinking, and by training ordinary men in the art of warfare by his gladiators.
These individuals would be forced to fight, sometimes till their death as a punishment. This fighting was a primary form of entertainment for the Roman society. Rarely gladiators would be free men who would volunteer to take on the status of a slave to reap the benefits of fame, excitement and
The distant clang of metal against metal, the feeling of weight being pushed upon your sword, and the prideful cries of battle. You let out a hefty laugh and pushed harshly against your blade making your opponent buckle and shake under your might. You draw back your arm with another mighty howl and bring it down in a sharp arc. Your opponent lets out a cry of pain as they writhe and scream on the ground before going still, their eyes going blank their mouth tilted upwards towards the sky in a silent prayer. You watch as blood seeps from their wounded front side and pool into the grass at an achingly slow pace.
I picked my left hoof up and used my right to launch myself to the left of my opponent. If he wanted me to go right, then so be it, I would go right. I thrashed away from him, bringing my wing up and aiming it at his jaw. I didn't want his teeth on my neck anymore. But the motions pained me, the ache he had left in my chest was still present and my breathing still wasn't quite normal. Stepping away from him was painful, too. He was hurting me even when he wasn't breathing down my neck.
Romans considered gladiators are great, intrepid, and eminent warriors back when they fought in the obstreperous coliseum. Despite all the gladiators several deaths and perilous circumstances to try and survive through people still envied their glory and wanted to be like them which to us would sounds preposterous. Even despite this “glory and fame” the only thing a gladiator could probably dream of was the day he might be free. However gladiators were constantly faced with combat, harsh life outside the coliseum, and had almost no chance of freedom.
The Nature of Gladiator Fights The Gladiatorial fights were noble in some ways, but in others seem to have the characteristics of the lowest form of entertainment. Gladiators were considered to fight with pride, they honoured their Gods with sacrifices and prayer for victory and they honoured their traditions and heritage, often being armed in weapons and armour, and having fighting styles originating from their country of origin. For example "the Gaul. " Glory and fame, were just two of the noble characteristics associated with gladiators, and they were dressed in the fashion of a noble soldier, often trained in the same way.
Most of the gladiators were criminals or prisoners of war that were forced to fight in the arena. Although they were considered slaves, they surprisingly had a better standard of living than most lower class Romans. Because they were financial investments, they had access to doctors and medicine, better food, and exercise. As the gladiator became more and more popular, he would attract greater crowds, making him more valuable, which led to getting him a better lifestyle. For this reason, some free citizens, aristocrats, and even emperors would join in hoping to increase their own wealth. Even slaves would train and fight hard because they could purchase their freedom once they accumulated enough wealth.
A gladiators life was far from easy. Most were slaves, prisoners of war, or hardened criminals, therefore they were not free men. Often times they were trained and forced to take part in the events, hoping for their freedom if
They had to inspect the men just by looking at their bodies and making sure they were strong and healthy enough to purchase. “I did not pay good money for you, for your company. I paid it so I could profit from your death,” he said. These quotes show that no one cared about the gladiators because they were slaves. All they cared about was that they put on a good show.
