Homer’s purpose to this epic story that he put told in “The Odyssey” was to show that even though a journey can be hard you should never forget your goal. I believe homer put Odysseus’ in all those situations deliberately to show how strong you can be even in hard situations. Odysseus’ new his goal was to reach back to his family and he never forgot that and he worked hard everyday to reach back. At the start of the book you see Odysseus’ goal appear when he is trying to get off of Calypso’s island, “Look at my wise Penelope…. Nevertheless I long--- I pine, all my days--- to travel home and see the dawn of my return”(159). Just like the phrase
“Never give up” I think this lesson that homer is portraying to us through the book roughly means the same thing.

This was due to his hard work and determination, which were two big characteristics that Odysseus had in the book. This shows you that hard work pays off. If Odysseus had just sat down and given up on his goal then he would never have a chance to see his family again or his native land, “He wept as he held the wife he loved, the soul of loyalty, in his arms at last”(463). This epic journey was a lot for Odysseus but he made it through the obstacles and had a great reunion with his loved ones. Odysseus also grew as a person throughout this journey and so did his son Telemachus. Odysseus showed loyalty towards not only his wife but towards the “Gods” as well and therefore he was shown good faith by the “Gods” especially Athena, “You are our messenger, Hermes, sent on all our missions. Announce to the nymph with lovely braids our fixed decree: Odysseus journeys home --the exile must
In The Odyssey- Part II, Odysseus with the help of his son and loyal servants. They slaughtered all the suitors and maids for the following: they tried to take advantage of his goods, they tried to marry his wife continuously, and destroyed his house. The slaughter of many of the suitors may have been brutal, but it was necessary.
To illustrate, it seems like Odysseus never gets tired and is always working hard to return home, which is the whole goal of the journey. The other sailors get exhausted and tell him, “Are you flesh and blood, Odysseus, to endure more than a man can? Do you ever tire? God, look at you, iron is what you’re made of.” (12. 162-164). This shows that Odysseus will not stop trying until he makes it back home. This proves his strength and will to work and fulfill his journey. He works double the amount the sailors do. This also shows that Odysseus has high hopes of making it back to Ithaca. He wants to keep trying and keep going to reunite with his son, wife, and home, he believes strongly he will make it back. In addition, Odysseus has strong faith in the gods and prays to them often for guidance and help. In book 12, it states, “so one day I withdrew to the interior to pray the gods in solitude, for the hope that one might show me some way of salvation” (230-232). This shows that Odysseus keeps his strong hopes and faith in the gods. He is asking for guidance and salvation proving that he needs the gods’ help and guidance to fulfill and complete his journey. This also shows that Odysseus knows that the only way to complete the journey is to have hope and faith in the gods. This furthermore proves that Odysseus is a hard worker when it comes to making it back to Ithaca because he knows he has the gods support. Odysseus’s hard work, high hopes, strong faith,
He claimed his love for his wife but had also stayed with another for 7 years, with Calypso. Although with this journey he took he had not only learned but dreaded things. Odysseus had come to realize with time he needed to find a way to get home even if it meant it would take forever. With Athena's help he manged to escape death and many hard obstacles. Fighting to keep himself afloat uneasy for him, but it taught
Every day on his long journey back home, he would think about his wife and son. He had a drive to return home even while being cursed by the god Poseidon. Trying so hard to return home for twenty years showed Odysseus loyalty because many people from that time would have given up trying to return home while being cursed by the gods. Odysseus was also trapped on the Island of the goddess Calypso. Odysseus was trapped there for many years, and the goddess even fell in love with him.
Around the 1200 B.C., Odysseus was sailing the Mediterranean Sea for the purpose of reaching home. In his long narrative poem, The Odyssey, Homer conveys how Odysseus desperately wishes to go home to Ithaca. However, he faces brutal treatment and obstacles from several different antagonists, and more obstacles appear when he reaches home. Odysseus came across many external conflicts, which he dealt with intelligence, determination, and loyalty.
The Odyssey by Homer, was an absolutely outstanding story, and it had me reading on the edge of my seat the entire time. Odysseus, the main protagonist in the story, had full blown determination to return back to his homeland, where his wife and son, Penelope and Telemachus, awaited him in Ithaca. After successfully attacking any obstacles thrown his way, Odysseus arrives back home. However, Athene disguises him as an old beggar, and he finds more than just his family awaiting him in the palace. Suitors had invaded his palace, and completely dishonored not only him, but his family. Odysseus ends up taking action and slaughters anyone who was involved in the wooers’ plot. Odysseus was fully justified in the actions he took. The punishment he
They sent Hermes, the messenger god to convince Calypso to let Odysseus get back to his wife and son. His problems were not over yet once he left the island, however, because he had made Zeus an enemy. Zeus sent a terrible storm to rip apart Odysseus 's raft with the intentions that he be lost at sea forever. Gods saved him from this fate, though, when Ino and Athena give him a veil to keep him from drowning and changing the wind to make sure the waves carried Odysseus home. It was very important that Odysseus was so reverent towards the gods; otherwise he never would have made it home from the Trojan War.
Have you ever thought you could not overcome an obstacle when there’s no hope ? In “The Odyssey” by Homer, is a epic hero tale that tells about a man’s 10 year journey trying to find a way home. Odysseus was motivated to set off on this journey to celebrate his victory after the Trojan War in Troy. Soon he goes through obstacles where he learns perseverance and
In the Odyssey, Odysseus and Telemachus each have a journey of their own, which in turn makes up a double plot in the epic. Odysseus’s plot has many more struggles and is the central role that creates the actual story in the whole novel. To many, the act of Odysseus moving across the sea in search of his own solutions to his issues is just a quest that is constantly being blocked by various obstacles. In all reality, with the help of the sea being a very important symbol, the journey turns Odysseus into a dynamic character as he proceeds through his travels. It is easily seen that in the beginning of his journey, starting when he and his crew landed on Polyhemus’ island, he is portrayed as a rash, egotistical young
First, one of the recurring themes in the Odyssey is that of cunningness over strength. Although Odysseus was known to be a strong and powerful of individual, his cunning was his strongest asset when it came to overcoming the obstacles in his travels. Instead of relying solely on his strength, he relies on his minds ability to deceive and manipulate individuals to do as he pleases. An example of this is seen when Odysseus with the help of Athena disguises himself as an old beggar. Instead of simply going to his home
In book five Odysseus is presented with a very great and tempting barrier. Calypso confronts him with this statement, “But if you only knew, down deep, what pains are fated to fill your cup before you reach that shore, you’d stay right here, preside in our house with me and be immortal.” She promised him that he would possess a trait that no other human in the odyssey has, immortality. Even though her offers are very tempting and would be self fulfilling, he promptly rejects because all he wants is to go home and the love of his life, Penelope. This act alone shows that he was willing to give himself and up for a greater cause. He showed great discipline and faithfulness to reject Calypso’s offer and to continue on his journey home. At the beginning of the epic, Odysseus did have one flaw that could have been detrimental to his homecoming journey and that was self-glorification. By the end of the Odyssey, Odysseus overcame his pride and tempered it with patience because at the end of the day he didn’t really know that Penelope would be waiting on him, but he was willing to put in the effort to find out what was at the end of the road.
In The Odyssey, Odysseus portrays an important trait to the story, perseverance. His perseverance really stands out as something that he has and always will have. On his long journey home, he never gives up and just stays where he is, no matter how tempting. He always manages to push through and keep getting closer to his goal of returning home. An example of when he does this is when he is faced with the challenge of getting past Skylla and Kharybdis. He knows that either path will kill at least some of his men and possibly him, but he knows he has to keep going. "And all this time,/ in travail,
As a wayfarer in life, The Odyssey focuses on life’s greater purpose through the fulfillment of destiny, perseverance, and loyalty. These three themes recur continuously throughout Odysseus’ journey, molding life’s greater vision. Odysseus comes to understand his purpose in life by remaining true to these major themes as he faces and conquers each obstacle in his journey.
The only thing Odysseus truly desired for twenty years was to return home to his family. Although Odysseus was looking forward to his homecoming, when he finally arrives home he disguises as a beggar, which is an odd thing to do considering that he was already home. He disguises himself, as a beggar because he was not sure whom he could really trusts considering he has been away for twenty years. He also wanted to test all the citizens and Penelope, his wife, of her loyalty. I believe that Odysseus unconsciously knew that the notion of home that he knew before has not changed. Once he proves that he could trust his family, he is just there for one night. It seems he could never truly stay home and Poseidon’s curse is true. Also, Odysseus seems to come to realize that his true home is actually being in an adventure with his crewmen. Odysseus undergoes so much suffering such as near death experiences just to arrive home.
With this loyalty Odysseus maintains the courage of a true leader through the perils of his journey. His name alone is given to him to show us, the readers right from the start of the book his will. Odysseus comes from the Greek meaning to be at odds with, very much like Odysseus is through his voyage. In the beginning we also hear about the scar that Odysseus bears, which was given to him to him at the young age of 12, when he was rammed in the process of killing a wild Bohr. This again showing us that even at an early age in his life it was not easy, and that he will endure wounds in his life.
