The Goal Of Odysseus In Homer's The Odyssey

Homer’s purpose to this epic story that he put told in “The Odyssey” was to show that even though a journey can be hard you should never forget your goal. I believe homer put Odysseus’ in all those situations deliberately to show how strong you can be even in hard situations. Odysseus’ new his goal was to reach back to his family and he never forgot that and he worked hard everyday to reach back. At the start of the book you see Odysseus’ goal appear when he is trying to get off of Calypso’s island, “Look at my wise Penelope…. Nevertheless I long--- I pine, all my days--- to travel home and see the dawn of my return”(159). Just like the phrase
“Never give up” I think this lesson that homer is portraying to us through the book roughly means the same thing. …show more content…

This was due to his hard work and determination, which were two big characteristics that Odysseus had in the book. This shows you that hard work pays off. If Odysseus had just sat down and given up on his goal then he would never have a chance to see his family again or his native land, “He wept as he held the wife he loved, the soul of loyalty, in his arms at last”(463). This epic journey was a lot for Odysseus but he made it through the obstacles and had a great reunion with his loved ones. Odysseus also grew as a person throughout this journey and so did his son Telemachus. Odysseus showed loyalty towards not only his wife but towards the “Gods” as well and therefore he was shown good faith by the “Gods” especially Athena, “You are our messenger, Hermes, sent on all our missions.
