The Grapes of Wrath a novel written in the year 1939 by John Steinbeck. The novel is about a family from Oklahoma moving to California hoping that they will get a job and their hopes and dreams will come true. After arriving there they realize that they are still at the same spot as before letting the book as an open ending in the barn without any resources checking the readers reality. Farming families move to California and observe them living in various squattler’s camps looking for work and ways to improve their lives because that’s what people living under capitalism do to survive. It cost Joads their farm when they’re unable to produce crops due to drought; they can't pay the bank what they owe and owner and tenants are trapped: if farmers don’t earn for their crops, then can’t pay their leases. If leases aren’t paid, the bank will take over. “If you who own the things people must have could understand this, you might preserve yourself. If you could separate causes form results, if you could know that Paine, Max, Jefferson, Lenin, were results, not causes, you might survive. But what you cannot know. For the quality of owning freezes you forever into ‘I’, and cuts you off forever from the ‘we,’” (pg 152). The threat of the farmers not surviving because of the works gathering together illustrates how suffering brings people together on account of the farmers putting themselves first. The people form the the West fear the workers that they will reunite and go against them causing profit to go down.
