For someone to be truly great they need to make sacrifices to become successful. Anyone can be great at something, but to be great at everything is a much more difficult feat to accomplish. The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is a famous novel taking place in the flapper days. J. Gatsby, a main character, is in love with a wealthy girl named Daisy. No matter how great Gatsby becomes he is unable to fulfill his dream of being with Daisy. However, because Gatsby couldn’t be with Daisy, he made himself become as great as a person can become. Gatsby turned himself into a gentleman, took himself from dirt poor to one of the richest men at the time, and he did it all with his motivation. Some suggest that Gatsby was not a great person because he was involved in illegal practices such as bootlegging. But in fact, bootlegging made him a great person because he was able to use the money that he made for good causes and he was also a fair person. He was extremely intelligent and understood how to be of help to others through his illegal activities. Greatness can often be seen by how wealthy one is; Gatsby was one of the most wealthy men of the time. Gatsby’s mansion was described by having, “a tower one one side, spanking new under a thin beard of raw ivy, and a marble swimming pool, and more than forty acres of lawn and garden.” (5). …show more content…

“He smiled understandingly - much more than understandingly. It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it that you may come across 4 or 5 times in life.” (48). Through smiles one can tell whether or not to trust the person. Smiles can make you look like a predator or they can be as wonderful as Gatsby’s where one can feel happier by just looking at him.
