After reading The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, I was able to gather a small playlist of songs that can relate to the book. The lyrics in these songs relate to scenes, symbols, and different characters in the book. The song What Is Love by Haddaway relates to the book because it can describe how Gatsby feels after Daisy confesses that she did in fact love Tom at some point in time. After Daisy tells Gatsby that “’I did love him once—but I loved you too’” (Fitzgerald 132). At this point Gatsby is thinking “What is love?” (Haddaway). When Gatsby replies with, “’You love me too?”’ (Fitzgerald 132). This is Gatsby’s way of saying “Baby, don’t hurt me, don’t hurt me no more” (Haddaway). Gatsby does not want Daisy to hurt his emotional well-being after he confessed his love for her again, the first time was five years ago. Gatsby does not want to lose Daisy to Tom again. What Is Love describes Gatsby as desperate because he is begging a woman, who he has known for many years, to run away with him for the rest of their lives. The song You Make My Dreams by Daryl Hall & John Oats expresses feeling that are very similar to Gatsby’s and Daisy’s after they meet each other. The song also fits perfectly with the scene where Gatsby is throwing shirts at Daisy. In chapter five, when Gatsby first sees Daisy he is very nervous because he does not know what to say. As they start to get along Gatsby feels like his dreams have come true. He has a lot of “of thoughts and dreams that
In the novel, Gatsby did so many things for Daisy that he did not even care for. Gatsby threw so many parties just to get the attention of Daisy. This particular part in the story is reminds me of the song Hurt because in one line Johnny Cash said “ And you could have it all my empire of dirt.” That is how Gatsby felt about Daisy although he did not care much for the parties he was willing to throw them for Dasiy. That scene in the book compared to the song because the parties to Gatsby was just dirt to him but he wanted to give it all to
love for a woman named Daisy. All of the events in the novel leading up to the final tragic death of Gatsby all initiated from his dream-like pursuit of Daisy. The development of Gatsby's feelings for Daisy in their years apart was similar to the feelings evoked by the lyrics of “Hey Delilah”, a song by the band Plain White T's.
Gatsby’s lets love dictate his course in life; hiding himself, he focuses on bringing Daisy in and letting go of his dream with money. After the first meeting with Daisy, Gatsby’s true intentions for her love
1. Fitzgerald achieves a melancholy mood in the beginning of the chapter by using sorrowful and negative word choices to describe events. In the first paragraph we learn about Nick's challenging night and how "I tossed half-sick between grotesque reality and savage, frightening dreams" (Fitzgerald, pg. 154). Introducing a new chapter with such saddening descriptions is done to make the readers continue reading with a more negative outlook. Even in the next few paragraphs Gatsby's actions are pitiful and naïve, and it makes the reader sad to see him so blind when they know more of what is going on than he does.
“Young and Beautiful” by Lana Del Rey, a modern day song, was best chosen for the love scenes and can be a song that tells about Daisy’s perspective. Every single line of this song can be interpreted in a way into the story. In the verses of the song, it’s talking about how Daisy would describe her experiences especially with Gatsby and how she’s full of riches. Daisy has “seen the world, done it all… seen the world, lit it up as her stage now”, describing her
All in all, as presented through this work, Gatsby was indeed in love with Daisy for the most part, in the beginning of their relationship, but it all change when Gatsby lost Daisy and so he let himself believed that his past was the one to blame for this circumstances. It is after this, that Gatsby became rather obsessed with the idea of Daisy and having a lovely future with her, because having her meant having it all: stability, confidence, love, happiness and so on. Also, it meant that he had succeeded in life as a whole. “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter—tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther. . . And then one fine morning— So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” (Chapter 9) All his life, Gatsby intended to escape
Although the timeline is kept vague in The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald makes it clear that his work of art is based in the early 1920’s between World War I and the Prohibition. This was a transitional period in the United States. America changed after the war and as a result, so did life. The idea of the perfect life fluctuated as troops began flooding back to the United States, migrating to cities, picking up jobs, and buying houses for their new or planned families. The economy was booming, jazz became the new popular music, woman (more commonly referred to as “flappers”) and men were expressing their freedom by having parties and hanging out in clubs or bars, Henry Ford just introduced the Model-T which made automobiles
Gatsby thinks that if he is filthy rich then he can get the girl of his dream. Daisy is the girl that owns the key to Gatsby’s heart. He came from nothing and now that he has money he feels that he can finally be with her and everything is how it is supposed to be. The poem says, “Eyes that love you, arms that hold you” and with all the money that he has Gatsby thinks that this will get daisy to love him. Sadly for him, those eyes are not the eyes of Daisy.
While Gatsby was a soldier, he fell in love with Daisy Fay. Before he left for war, Daisy promised Jay that she would wait for him, but she did not. After finding out, Gatsby made it his goal to get her back, and after many years, he still wanted her back. In chapter four, Nick says that it’s a coincidence that Gatsby and Daisy lived so close to each other, but Jordan informs him that it was not a coincidence, “Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay.” In chapter five, Gatsby shows Daisy a scrapbook he had made for her and she is overwhelmed, she begins crying tears of joy. As stated before, Gatsby was a huge romantic and always had hope that maybe one day, Daisy would come back to him.
There are many dreams that are considered to be the “American Dream”, such as love, upward mobility, wealth, family, and home ownership. Most people consider money and status to be the great American dream, but they are not the only dreams that people strive for. The novel, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, focuses on many of these, but the dream of love and being with the one that they truly love is focused more when considering Jay Gatsby and the novel. Gatsby has a dream that he and the love of his life, Daisy, will fall in love again and they will get back together. He wants to relive the past and have it like it was before he went to war. Before he went to war they were greatly fond of each other. Daisy was
One of my favorite classic rock songs has always been “Glory Days” by Bruce Springsteen. I grew up listening to my dad’s music and this is one song that has always stuck with me. When I first found out that it was inspired by the Novel “The Great Gatsby” by F Scott. Fitzgerald I was shocked, I had never really listened to the lyrics before. After Reading the book and listening to the song a few more times, I realized that every verse is loosely based on different main characters. This gave the song new meaning for me, it now makes me picture the characters from the book and also has reminiscent sadness attached to it while still connecting to the idea of the American dream, a theme which is also very prevalent in the great Gatsby. The inspiration of characters for verses in this song makes it connects with the book on a whole new level.
Gatsby has always been in love with Daisy. Since the day he met her, roughly five years ago from where the book starts. He fell in love and Daisy promised that she would wait for Gatsby to return from war, and that they would reunite and love happily together. Gatsby’s goal is getting Daisy back. Not just getting her back and going from where their lives both were, but getting the Daisy back from five years ago, with no recollection of Tom
The Great Gatsby had a lot of themes for every character. One of these is the love and the past connections of Daisy and Gatsby. Their connections to each other is what makes the story really interesting. It also makes the middle to end parts of the story so unique.
Gatsby replies that Daisy loves him and had never loved Tom to which Tom hastily objects. They begin arguing about who Daisy truly loves and whether she has ever loved Tom. In return he accused Gatsby of bootlegging and other criminal activities. At this point Daisy starts siding with Tom and Gatsby realises that he has been defeated. Gatsby had tried to lay out and create the perfect future but Tom had controlled the past by bringing back intimate memories. This is a very significant part of the book as this is when Gatsby’s dream, which parallels with the American dream shatters. Everything that he had worked for, the dream he had bound himself to was destroyed in that moment and that was what broke Gatsby and made him not so ‘great’ any more. “…Only the dead dream fought on as the afternoon slipped away, trying to touch what was no longer tangible, struggling unhappily, undespairingly, toward that lost voice across the room.”
