F. Scott Fitzgerald is well known for his numerous short stories and novels during the “Jazz Age”. Take for instance, his best-selling novel The Great Gatsby and one of his short stories “Winter Dreams”. Each tell a cunning tale of romance and “the one who got away”. These two tales provide a glimpse into the lives of the rich and poor in the dazzling “Jazz Age”. However, these two stories have their differences, and they each have similar points for the reader to discover. Throughout F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novels there are numerous differences and similarities that bring out the best of the plot, setting, and imagery. The Great Gatsby is a novel narrated by Nick Carraway, a man moves into the town of West Egg on Long Island. Next to his house is a magnificent mansion owned by the notorious Jay Gatsby. The novel describes how Nick unravels the mysteries that lie behind that cunning Gatsby smile. The Great Gatsby is told by a third-person perspective, but is narrated by Nick Carraway. “Winter Dreams” on the other hand, is told strictly by a third-person perspective with a narrator that is not the main character. “Winter Dreams” tells the story of Dexter Green, who crosses paths with Judy Jones, a beautiful woman who just happened to be golfing at the club Dexter caddies at. From first sight Dexter is determined to solve the mysteries surrounding this gorgeous creature he had just met. Similar to The Great Gatsby where Nick is trying to figure out Jay Gatsby.
