Throughout the film, the main characters Billy and Nick, as well as their group, display high levels of motivation. “Motivation is a critical consideration because effective job performance often requires high levels of both ability and motivation” (Colquitt, J., p 164). Not only do Billy and Nick exhibit motivation towards their work performance, but they also clearly show motivation in boosting the morale of their group. In the movie scene 1:39:53-1:40:22, Billy shows up to the pizzeria right when it is imperative that the group convince the owner to agree to their proposal. In this scene, the group is feeling defeated as they try to get the pizzeria owner to sign up with Google to promote his pizza business, but he refuses. In this scene,
In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Fitzgerald builds theme of personal ambition by using the setting and the characterization to show the significance of the main persona, Gatsby’s personal ambition. Fitzgerald uses the setting of East Egg and West Egg and characterization of Daisy and Dan Cody on the connection they have with Jay Gatsby. Jay Gatsby’s ambition is to achieve the American Dream. In Gatsby’s eyes, to achieve the American Dream consist of becoming the richest man and sharing his wealth with the woman he loves right by his side. Jay, based of his characterization, never sees himself as the poor man and
The plot of The Great Gatsby, a novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is driven by Jay Gatsby's
“But I didn't call to him for he gave a sudden intimation that he was content to be alone—he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and far as I was from him I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward—and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock”(Fitzgerald 21).
1. Fitzgerald achieves a melancholy mood in the beginning of the chapter by using sorrowful and negative word choices to describe events. In the first paragraph we learn about Nick's challenging night and how "I tossed half-sick between grotesque reality and savage, frightening dreams" (Fitzgerald, pg. 154). Introducing a new chapter with such saddening descriptions is done to make the readers continue reading with a more negative outlook. Even in the next few paragraphs Gatsby's actions are pitiful and naïve, and it makes the reader sad to see him so blind when they know more of what is going on than he does.
The Pursuit of Satisfaction: An Analysis of How Chasing the Ideas of the American Dream Leads to the Characterization of Prominent Figures in The Great Gatsby.
The interview titled “Produce Stand Owner” by James Norwood Corbett is about a 55-year old man who sells products from a stand he owns along a highway, most notably peanuts that he boils with lemons. Although he does not make a ton of money doing this and sleeps in a small camper whenever he can, he seems to be motivated by being able to set his own schedule, do what he wants, and thus, he seems satisfied with his job, as he states in the interview “I’m just happy doing this”. As discussed in class, motivation is important because it relates to performance. Our motivation is a determinant of our behavior, meaning that the more motivated someone is, the better they will perform. The produce stand owner is so motivated that he stays “at the
After reading The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, I was able to gather a small playlist of songs that can relate to the book. The lyrics in these songs relate to scenes, symbols, and different characters in the book.
The central theme is about the type of person Tom Buchanan is in the book. According to page 128-129, Tom is a suspicious type of person based on that he does not know much about the relationship of Daisy, his wife, and Gatsby. This is based on the actions that he saw Daisy having with Gatsby before they were heading out to town on car. Furthermore, he started investigating about the past of Gatsby and the type of person he was. Based on what he has found, Jordan is trying to defend Gatsby on what Tom is saying about him. Despite this, Tom is able to counter what Jordan has said about Gatsby’s past. The result was to see the type of person Gatsby was and how he had managed to meet Daisy before both of them were married.
As I slowly crossed the flight of steps wondering what was going to happen, the butler led me upstairs inviting me to enter the study. I desperately searched for a look from Nick, who was already searching around for someone to talk with.
Themes of hope, success, and wealth overpower The Great Gatsby, leaving the reader with a new way to look at the roaring twenties, showing that not everything was good in this era. F. Scott Fitzgerald creates the characters in this book to live and recreate past memories and relationships. This was evident with Gatsby and Daisy’s relationship, Tom and Daisy’s struggling marriage, and Gatsby expecting so much of Daisy and wanting her to be the person she once was. The theme of this novel is to acknowledge the past, but do not recreate and live in the past because then you will not be living in the present, taking advantage of new opportunities.
Last week at the rally it was very intense and had so much excitement throughout time. The rally brought much entertainment to our husky crowd. The rally was motivating because our huskies needed to be pumped up to get the crowd into it. The crowd felt they needed to help our teams get the motivation to get the win and secure our home fields. The way our teams played they played really hard so they can try to win for our school. The rally brought our fan base together to feel we could win no matter who the opponents are. We all came together to feel the pride we have for our school. The rallies are great ideas to get as much of the motivation we can to keep the feeling going. The way our sport teams play we play with much passion and play to
The search for the American Dream Kevin Ngo once said “Why should you continue going after your dreams? Because seeing the look on the faces of the people who said you couldn’t… will be priceless.” The Great Gatsby is a story told by Nick Carraway, who was once Gatsby's neighbor, and he tells the story set in 1925, at a time when Americans were experiencing a new and untouched modernistic lifestyle. As the story opens, Nick has just moved from the Midwest to West Egg, Long Island, seeking his fortune as a bond salesman. In The Great Gatsby the author establishes that dreams inspire self-motivation as demonstrated by the characters Gatsby, Daisy, and Nick as they search for the American Dream.
The supernatural is one of the most mysterious cases today that no one for sure knows is real. The concept of ghosts and objects appearing even though they really are not there is especially a regular topic when one thinks of the supernatural. It just so happens that these ideas are in The Tragedy of Macbeth as well. Although many people think Lady Macbeth motivated Macbeth to be a cold-blooded killer, in William Shakespeare’s play, The Tragedy of Macbeth, it is the supernatural that increases his thoughts of gaining power and killing, especially when he sees the dagger that leads to King Duncan’s room, the ghost of Banquo during the banquet, and the apparitions. First off, many think that Macbeth was convinced by his own wife to murder King Duncan.
Islam is one of the most misunderstood religions in the United States due to stereotypes. Not many Americans have actually taken the time to learn firsthand about the Islamic religion. Typically Muslims pray five times a day;however they attend mosque on Fridays. I have never been inside a mosque and I was very surprised with what I saw. Since visiting the mosque I learned important lessons that I will remember for years to come.
How would you feel if someone you had trusted betrayed you? Made you feel like rotting garbage every single day of your freaking life. Kept on saying, I’m trying to help you, when really they hated the way you dressed, they hated your personality, and they just hated you. What would happen if that spoiled brat was your so-called “BFF”, “Best Friend", or even “Sister”? Every single day of the fourth grade to fifth grade was another day to think about what would happen if I said ”I was too busy” or “I had something to do last week” or even “I had a dentist appointment that day”. Every single day was a complete nightmare that I just kept trying to run away from, but it always seemed to catch up to me. She was not always another Bowser, and I was not always another Mario. Trying to defeat Bowser with the fire flower it always seemed to glitch and error. So Bowser would knock my every shot down and GAME OVER for me.
