The story The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald takes you through the life of the protagonist of the novel, Jay Gatsby, who is shot to death in the end. Who was really the reason for Gatsby’s death? There are many of reasons that lead up to Gatsby’s death and several people who are considered to have caused it. Although George Wilson physically killed him, Tom Buchanan, Daisy Buchanan and Jay Gatsby himself all take part in the death. Tom’s anger, Daisy’s carelessness, and Gatsby’s idea of the American Dream all contribute to his death in the end.

The American Dream is an ideology set in the United States that ideals freedom through success achieved through hard work in a society with few barriers. Today, 2018, those who interact in everyday society will come across many citizens of all ages that suffer from many incurable diseases, addictions,  and mental illnesses. That, or they do not seek help from others for the disorders they obtain. If one were to essay the works by F. Scott Fitzgerald, they will come to find that he discusses his experiences and sufferings with an addiction, dealing with close loved ones that also suffer from mental illnesses, alike his wife who suffered from anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts and tendencies, and he writes about characters who don’t have any problems, the characters he wishes he were like. Due to the questionable morals and adult symbolism, many critics are concerned about the influence the book may have on teenage readers. However, many supporters have pointed out that these thematic elements are a warning rather than an invitation. The Great Gatsby should be taught in in 10th grade literature, due to the literary, contemporary and historical value of the book which far outweighs the negative aspects.

In The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby spends his life building wealth in order to earn the love of Daisy Buchanan, a woman he loved in his younger years who could not marry him due to his lack of wealth.
